14 roads remain closed after Matthew, 2015 flood

Fourteen Clarendon County and state-maintained roads remain closed after damage from both Hurricane Matthew and the October 2015 flood. Combined, the storms took out nearly 100 Clarendon roads, with many roads damaged from Hurricane Matthew previously undamaged by the previous year’s flooding.
Clarendon County Administrator David Epperson said that Clarendon County saw more than $5.6 million in damages from Hurricane Matthew, including to its road infrastructure. He said there is no set time for the following roads to be fixed. U.S. 301 from Manning to Turbeville, which was washed out in multiple places one year ago, is expected to open … Read the rest


Boy, 6, recovering after being set on fire Sunday

Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett said an accident likely led to a 6-year-old boy being set on fire at an Alcolu home early Sunday afternoon.
The boy, who received second-degree burns on his back, was playing with another child, who allegedly squirted the victim with lighter fluid about 2 p.m. Sunday.
“They got ahold of some lighter fluid, and it got on the 6 year old,” Garrett said. “The other boy’s father was out there working, he’s a mechanic, and he was working with his grinders, and a spark ignited the victim.”

IRS warns of fake bills related to ACA

The IRS is warning tax payers and preparers to watch out for a scam involving fake tax bills related to the Affordable Care Act.
The agency has logged numerous reports about scammers nationwide sending a fraudulent version of CP2000 notices for tax year 2015 via email.
The CP2000 notice is commonly mailed to taxpayers through the U.S. Postal Service and is never sent via email. The IRS does not initiate unsolicited email contact or contact by social media.
The issue has been reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for investigation.
