Clarendon County's elected treasurer will be wearing another hat starting in 2018, in addition to his role as county treasurer.

Treasurer Matt Evans was elected president for the Government Finance Officers Association of South Carolina during the organization's fall conference held Oct. 16-19. The position also involves a three-year term with the GFOASC Board of Directors, during which Evans will first serve as president-elect, then president and then immediate past-president.

Evans has served in the Clarendon County Treasurer's Office for 31 years, and is currently in his fourth term as treasurer, having been re-elected unopposed in 2015. He is also currently completing a two-year term on the GFOASC Board as a state representative.

In that capacity, Evans had the opportunity to attend the annual National GFOA Conferences in Philadelphia in 2015 and Toronto in 2016. Prior to serving as a state representative, Evans had served as a board member, along with numerous committees.

Seeking to promote the professional competence of those responsible for the trust of public funds, GFOASC has more than 600 members representing state, county, and municipal governments; special purpose and school districts; public institutions of higher education; and private businesses and corporations.

Established in 1984, the Government Finance Officers Association of South Carolina is a non-profit organization under South Carolina law. GFOASC offers a certification program that upon successful completion of a five-part examination allows a qualified government finance officer to use the designation of CGFO – Certified Government Finance Officer.

Evans has held his certification since 1996, and continues to complete annual continuing education requirements.
