Band and Barbecue on Brooks Street to be held Sept. 20

Main Street Manning, a department of the city of Manning, will hold its required Annual Meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 on Brooks Street with a Band and Barbecue on Brooks Street. Enjoy the sounds of Distant Couzins and the taste of local barbecue. Don’t forget to bring a chair to enjoy the evening!

JV Lady Saints defeat Andrew Jackson

The junior varsity Lady Saints volleyball team traveled Thursday to Andrew Jackson Academy, picking up a 2-0 win with scores of 25-15 and 25-18. Chloe Anderson led the JV Lady Saints wth 13 service points and seven aces. Hadleigh McIntosh added 10 points and two aces while Amberly Way had seven points and three aces. The JV Lady Saints are now 5-0 on the season and will play again on Monday in Summerton against Westside Christian.

Sumter man killed in Clarendon wreck

A 56-year-old Sumter man was killed Thursday morning in a two-car wreck at the interseciton of Barrineau and Salem roads.
Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuel said an autopsy of Gerold Walton Garner is being performed today at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. The S.C. Highway Patrol reported Friday that the wreck happened about 10:34 a.m. Thursday when a 2005 Chevrolet SUV was traveling southbound on Barrineau Road, disregarded a stop sign and hit a 2005 Chevrolet four-door vehicle, which was traveling east on Salem Road. The SUV hit the car on its driver’s side.

Eagles prepare for wrestling season

Though football and volleyball are the main focus of most of Clarendon’s high schools, one school is working toward a sport it will begin in December.
The Scott’s Branch High School wrestling program will get underway with the Eagles’ first home meet at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at home, and Coach Curtis Holland is gearing up for what he hopes will be a great season.
“With the help of Summerton Rotary and Birdfest, we raised more than $2,300 to help pay for wrestling shoes and our singlets – the uniforms used during competition,” Holland said.

Alzheimer’s group to hold Benefit Run Sept. 17

The Lake Marion Alzheimer’s 16th annual benefit run will be held Sept. 17, with registration at 11 a.m. at Manning Restaurant, 476 N. Brook St. in Manning, and noon at Lakevue Landing, 1543 Camp Shelor Road. The run will end 3 p.m. that day at Lakevue Landing. The registration fee per couple is $30, and per person is $20. Prizes include $100 for first; $75 for second; and $50 for third. There will be an IGA gift card presented to the lowest hand. For more information, call (803) 478-4820.

Adult Ed to hold more registration, orientation sessions

Clarendon County Adult Education will host another registration, testing and orientation session for new and returning students starting at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 12-13, and the sessions will last about three hours each day. Students must attend both days of the process in order to begin classes Sept. 14.
The evening program classes at F.E. DuBose will meet on Monday and Wednesday September 12 and 14, for these sessions, at our normal times of 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Residents receive threatening phone calls

Judy Haselden was enjoying a nice lunch last week at D&H Barbecue when her cell phone began ringing.
She answered the call as she would any other.
“There was a young guy on the phone, and he was just screaming and hollering,” she said.
The caller, she said, accused Haselden of hitting his vehicle and causing damages.

Summerton woman found

Family members of a Summerton woman who did not show up as planned Tuesday night say that she has been found safe.
Karen Pierce was supposed to get to her home on Lake Marion Tuesday night, but didn’t show up, daughter Lisa Wegner said.
“Her car broke down, and she has been found,” Wegner said.
The family filed a report Wednesday with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about the disappearance.

Manning High FFA hold Back-to-School Bash

The Manning High School FFA kicked off its membership year Aug. 28 with its Back-to-School Bash, a school-wide celebration that included free hot dogs for students, along with good music and fellowship.
