The Sumter County Sheriff's Office released Thursday the dashcam video from a shootout with 25-year-old Dontrell Montese Carter, who allegedly fired multiple shots at deputies after a high-speed chase early Sept. 18.
At a press conference held Thursday, during the release of the video, Sumter Sheriff Anthony Dennis said that Carter faces at least seven counts of attempted murder.
Dennis said the search for Carter now extends outside of Sumter and South Carolina. Spokesman Ken Bell said
Carter has ties to Charlotte, North Carolina, and Homestead, Florida, and could be in one of those areas. He said the U.S. Marshalls' Office and the State Law Enforcement Division have joined the search.
"Dontrell Carter is a dangerous individual with no regard for others," Dennis said in a video posted to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page. Sumter Police Chief Russell Roark agreed.
"He is a danger to the community, not just to law enforcement, but to those he knows as well," Roark said.
The Sumter Citizen reported recently that Carter has been awaiting trial on various violent crime charges - including attempted murder - since 2008, and that he has been arrested at least 14 times in the past eight years.
Deputies describe Carter as a 5-foot-10, black male with dreadlocks, weighing about 170 pounds. They warn the public not to approach Carter, but to immediately call 911 if residents see him or learn of his whereabouts.
