A group of Wyboo residents are currently gearing up for an event that will raise funds for a special little boy who has fought heart problems in the past few years.
An Ice Cream Social in honor of James Smith will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, and will feature a drawing for one-week vacation lodging at the Wyndham Vacation Resort of your choice.
Tickets for the drawing are $25 each or five for $100.
The vacation has been donated by a Wyboo resident and member of the Homeowners Association there who wanted to help out the family of James Smith, a Laurence Manning Academy student who had a heart transplant earlier this year.
James, the son of Dr. James “Jim” R. Smith and Holly Smith, faces medical bills in excess of $750,000, even with insurance, at just the tender age of 5. James was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy in summer 2015, a condition for which his father, a pediatrician, also underwent a heart transplant at the age of 15.
The condition is ultimately non-treatable, other than by transplant surgery, after which the family had to stay in Charleston at least six weeks for medical supervision.
“We know that the boy is doing well,” said one of the Wyboo residents who asked not to be named. “This is just an effort from all of us at Wyboo, where the family lives. We don’t want the recognition. We just want to help the family.”
Tickets for the drawing are currently available at CJ’s Creations, Wen-Lily’s, Summerton Drugs, The Dog House, Georgio’s, Tanner’s and Edward Jones – Derrick Fort.
