A 60-year-old Florida man was killed late Monday morning after his vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a utility pole on Bill Davis Road near Summerton. Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said Timothy Payne of St. Augustine, Florida, was wearing a seatbelt, and that the man was trapped in his 1998 Chevrolet van after the wreck, which occurred about 11:45 a.m. Monday. Clarendon County Dep. Coroner Bucky Mock said Payne died at the scene of the wreck. He said an autopsy will be performed at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Southern said that Payne was traveling southbound on M.G. Hemingway Road when he crossed over Bill Davis Road, ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole. The wreck caused about 5,820 residents in Clarendon County to be without power for a couple of hours on Monday. Power was restored by mid-afternoon Monday. Mock said Tuesday's autopsy will show whether Payne "died before the wreck or as a result of the wreck."
