Students at Scott's Branch High School received inspiration recently from two of Clarendon's longtime political figures. Both Sen. Kevin L. Johnson and Clarendon County Council Chairman Dwight Stewart attended the Scott's Branch Middle-High School College Application Day held Aug. 29 to encourage aspiring students. "I'm just here to encourage these seniors and to let them know that the decision to go to college is an important decision, one that will impact their lives in a great way," said Johnson. "I'm here to encourage and offer some good advice based on my own experiences, and I'm glad to be here. Education is the key to our future." Johnson told seniors gathered at the school that their last year of high school is a milestone, an exciting and important time that will have a lasting impact. "Forty years ago, I was in their shoes, and I never dreamed that I would accomplish some of the things that I have accomplished in my life, but the key is for them to be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that come their way," Johnson said. Johnson said that students need to take advantage of good opportunities and to be aware of negative distractions and bad choices that will tempt them from their goals during their college careers. Stewart told stuents the importance of being good role models. "Being a role model to younger siblings or younger cousins plays a large part in their young lives so that they, too, may one day have the opportunities you have," he said. "Also, workibg toward being a role model makes you a better person." Special recognition was given to Tymir Tindal, senior class president. After the morning’s venue, students and representatives made their ways to computer labs that were set up to start the process of applying to colleges. Representatives spent the morning with the seniors weaving through computer clad desks assisting with their applications. Guidance Councelor Diane Georgia assisted guests and students to ensure a productive and successful morning. Representatives from various colleges and universities included Allen University's Charles Singley; Frances Marion University's Cody Simpson; College of Charleston's Debbie Counts; Central Carolina Technical College's Diana Green; and South Carolina State University's Anthony Wright. The representatives offered information about scholarships, and various opportunities for admission to their institutes.
