The Sumter County Coroner's Office has identified a 37-year-old man killed early Tuesday morning in a chase that began in Clarendon County. Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock said Billy Ray Hinson was declared dead at the scene of a motorcycle wreck, which happened on Nazarene Church Road in Sumter about 1:10 a.m. Tuesday. According to a report from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Hinson was on the run from Clarendon County deputies when he crossed over into Sumter County, fled down Nazarene Church Road, went off the right side of the road and hit a ditch. S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said Hinson was riding a 2007 Honda motorcycle and that he was wearing a helmet. His body was found nearby the bike. Clarendon County Sheriff's Office Maj. Kipp Coker said that reports show that deputies attempted to stop Hinson in Clarendon County due to having improper tags. "They got up to him to perform the traffic stop after hitting their blue lights, and he took off after looking like he was going to slow down," Coker said. "Of course, a pursuit ensued after that."
