Clarendon Dems to meet Thursday

The Clarendon County Democratic Party will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the Bassard Pond House, 4162 Rev. J.W. Carter Road in Summerton. We will be discussing important information on Getting Out the Vote for the November election and hear recommendations from the County Party Executive Committee and you. Monarchs move game to Thursday

The Manning High School Monarchs will play Lakewood at home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, a day ahead of schedule due to possible inclement weather forecasted for Friday.

Voter Registration Office to be at Back-to-School Block Party

Officials with the Clarendon County Voter Registration and Elections Office will be on hand from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Summerton’s Wasau Park for the Back-to-School Block Party being held there. Office staff will be taking registrations and absentee ballot requests.

Clarendon GOP to meet Sept. 8

The Clarendon County GOP will hold its regular meeting 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at Cornerstone Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church on Greeleyville Highway in Manning, with dinner starting at 6 p.m. Speakers are subject to change, but will include 6th District Congressional candidate Laura Sterling; Clarendon County Council District 2 candidate Joe Witt; and South Carolina Senate Seat 36 candidate Leon Winn.

CCFD to ‘Fill the Boot’ for Muscular Dystrophy Association

The Clarendon County Fire Department will be holding a boot drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Firefighters will fill boots at four separate locations throughout the county with your donations. They will be at the intersections of Boundary and Boyce streets and Sunset and Mill streets in Manning; Church and Main streets in Summerton; and Clarence Coker Highway and Main Street in Turbeville.

Summerton native enrolls at Brenau University

GAINESVILLE, Georgia – Summerton native Alaina Leigh Belser has enrolled at Brenau University for the Fall 2016 semester. She is pursuing a major in occupational therapy. Founded in 1878, Brenau University is a private, not-for-profit nationally prominent comprehensive institution of higher education that enrolls students in graduate and undergraduate studies on campuses and online. Gainesville, Georgia-based Brenau includes the residential Women’s College, which represents the academic and philosophical underpinnings of the liberal arts university. Lady Swampcats defeated on home tennis court

The Laurence Manning Academy varsity tennis team fell in 12 matches Tuesday at home while hosting Trinity Byrnes. Lady Swampcats on the court included Amanda Newman, who went 1-6 and 0-6; Mason Ham, who went 0-6 and 0-6; Eliza Davis, who went 0-6 and 0-6; Carley Tsukalas, who went 1/6 and 0/6; Hannah Graham, who went 0-6 and 1-6; and Caroline Robinson, who went 2-6 and 2-6. In doubles, the Lady Swampcats came up 0-3 against Trinity Byrnes. Amanda Newman and Carley Tsukalas went 0-8, while Mason Ham and Eliza Davis went 3-8 and Laura Helen Johnson and Macey Wilson

Lady Saints fall to Williamsburg Academy

The Clarendon Hall varsity Lady Saints fell 3-1 to Williamsburg Academy on Tuesday, with scores of 25-11 (W), 25-21 (L), 25-8 (L) and 25-14 (L). Ava English led the Lady Saints with 16 service points and five aces. Keri Shaffer added 14 points and Madison Kidd added 12 points. The team will play again Thursday against Patrick Henry at home.

The Laurence Manning Academy Lady Swampcats fell Monday night to Thomas Sumter in Dalzell, with three losing games. Scores were 25-17, 25-8 and 25-13. Brooke Ward led the team with eight serve points, five kills and three blocks.

JV Lady Saints defeat Williamsburg

The Clarendon Hall junior varsity Lady Saints defeated Williamsburg Academy Tuesday in Summerton in both volleyball matches, with scores of 25-11 and 25-18. Wells James led the Lady Saints with 13 service points and four aces. Chloe Anderson and Whitney Avins had 10 points each. The team is now 3-0 on the season. They will play again 5 p.m. Thursday at Clarendon Hall against Patrick Henry.

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Thomas Sumter on Monday in two games on the volleyball court. The scores were 25-18 and 27-25. Madisyn Hudson led the team with 11 serve points and five aces, and Abby Haney followed with seven serve points and four aces.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following recipe was provided by Sandi Tucker for The Manning Times’ bi-monthly column, Clarendon Cooks. 6 Servings 1 loaf crusty Italian bread, small 3 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 medium sweet red peppers 1 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes 1-1/2 teaspoons dried basil 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt fresh ground black pepper Thinly slice bread, remove crusts and cut into enough half-inch croutons to make 1 cup. Locals earn degrees from Western Governors University

Three Manning residents and one Sumter resident have received degrees from Western Governors University based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The university held its 31st semi-annual commencement ceremony July 16 in Salt Lake City, celebrating the graduation of more than 8,000 students. Those hailing from Manning included Jennifer Barrett and Joy Stegall, who both received a bachelor of science degree in nursing; and Tiffany Boing, who received a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood education. Sumter resident Martha Tomlin also received a bachelor of science degree in nursing. At its commencement, the university awarded 4,944 undergraduate and 3,103 graduate… Read the rest
