A 38-year-old Alcolu man charged in Sumter for the alleged attempted murder of his father will serve 10 years in prison on the lesser-included offense assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Darrick Devon Sweat, formerly of 1089 Ocean Road in Alcolu, pleaded guilty June 20 to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in Sumter General Sessions Court before 3rd Circuit Judge R. Ferrell Cothran. Cothran sentenced Sweat to 15 years in prison, suspended to 10 years in prison and five years' probation to follow. He may also have no contact with the victim. He was accused in early 2015 of shooting his then-63-year-old father, Charles Everett Sweat, during a dispute at the elder man's home. Everett was transported to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia with two gunshot wounds to the upper body. On the same day of his plea in Sumter, Sweat also pleaded guilty to two charges in Clarendon County of manufacture and possession of a controlled substance, first offense, receiving five-year concurrent sentences on both charges. Sweat was represented in Sumter by Public Defender Susan Elaine Cooke, and in Clarendon by Public Defender Scott Robinson.
