Memorial Day in South Carolina

Posted
The arrival of Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer for many. This weekend, as South Carolinians light up their grills and enjoy the state's beautiful lakes, rivers and coastlines, it's important to reflect upon the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. Here in South Carolina, we proudly support a vast network of eight different major military installations. From Fort Jackson situated near the state's capital to Parris Island located on the beaches of Beaufort County, each installation helps drive economic activity within the local community, employing thousands of our citizens. According to a report commissioned by the South Carolina Military Base Task Force, the military presence here employs more than 144,000 and results in an annual economic impact of more than $19.3 billion. The men and women stationed in the Palmetto State play a crucial role, not only in South Carolina's economy, but in defending our nation's freedom. They represent our families, our neighbors and our friends. So, while you're enjoying the long weekend, take time to reflect on those who gave their lives to ensure that both South Carolina and our nation remain 'Just right.'
