Recital will partner with Soles4Souls Sunday at Weldon

Donna Prothro's recital will not only present beautiful dancers this weekend.

Rather, the event, which begins 3 p.m. Sunday at Weldon Auditorium, is asking folks to give back by bringing shoes for Soles4Souls.

"I thought it was time to give back," said Prothro, owner of and instructor at The Dancer's Workshop. "I wanted to give back to the community, not only by showing what the children are capable of, but also by helping the entire world. Our actions here in Clarendon County may affect children or adults in other parts of he world in a positive way."

This is Prothro's 36th annual recital, which features groups and solo dances from toddlers through high school-age students.

This year's recital is named "Shine."

"This is one of the cuts from Tiffany Johnson's album," said Prothro.

Johnson, a Paxville native, is the director for Soles4Souls, a non-profit ministry that provides shoes to the less fortunate throughout the world. She came home last year with Clothes4Souls, a subdivision of Soles4Souls, to help distribute nearly 2,500 coats in the Clarendon community for those affected by October's flooding.

"She is such a wonderful young woman," said Prothro. "I'm pleased that she's coming to join us."

Johnson will be at the recital, and will dance with her younger cousin, Jordan Welch, to another song from her album, "My Dorothy Shoes."

"It's about her when she was little, and we will have on-hand the original Dorothy shoes as she's dancing," Prothro said. "We'll be dancing with the shoes."

While Prothro is always hopeful her recitals will be packed, she's especially hopeful this year that the lobby is full of shoes that will help children throughout the world.

"We hope everyone will support us wholeheartedly as we try to give back to humanity," Prothro said.
