Manning High creates community garden

The Manning High School agriculture department established raised-bed gardens as part of the project-based learning curriculum. Raised bed gardening is a form of gardening in which soil is formed in beds.

"It is great for growing small pots of vegetables, such as squash, cabbage, cucumbers and many other flowers and vegetables," said Coach Michael Hayens. "Raised-bed gardening is indeed unique. The garden provides good drainage for soil, a great way to plant and harvest crops, and has the ability to bring our community together as one."

Haynes said the project was funded through Santee Electric Cooperative and the National FFA Organization grants' program.

He said the garden is open to "all individuals in the community" as of May 14.
