Getting to Know Miss Clarendon 2016 Drue Floyd

New Zion native Drue Floyd is in her third month as Miss Clarendon 2016.
Manninglive.com will be posting these little blurbs throughout the next few weeks and months so readers can get to know her as she prepares for Miss South Carolina in June.
Floyd is a graduate of East Clarendon High School, where her favorite teacher was Sherrilyn Gibbons.
“She was so patient and used her love for math to make each class enjoyable,” said Floyd, whose favorite subject was “definitely math.”

Don Coker announced as winner of boat drawing for Kerrie Cribb

Don Coker was the owner of the winning ticket in the drawing held Saturday for Kerrie Cribb, who is battling an aggressive form of cervical cancer. Organizers of the drawing sold $200 tickets for $25 each to help with Cribb’s medical and personal experiences. Coker was not present for the drawing.

Former Habitat president working on final project

John Belding turned 70 in February. Just a few months before, during Clarendon County Habitat for Humanity’s groundbreaking for its 23rd house off Huggins Street, he handed the reins of the organization to Judge James Dingle.
“I’ve been doing this now for more than a decade,” Belding said. “And it’s time to retire. I believe we have a good board and good leadership.”
Belding has still been helping with the construction of the home, his 13th overall, spending at least one to two Saturdays monthly on the project. Born in Syracuse, New York, Belding was raised in Lockhern, Maryland, just … Read the rest

Johnson unopposed in Democratic primary for Senate District 36

Sen. Kevin Johnson said he plans to work “twice as hard” as he did four years ago in retaining the South Carolina State Senate District 36 seat he initially won in 2012.
Johnson was the sole Democrat to file for the office and will face no opposition in June’s primary. He said Wednesday that, instead, he will look toward his opposition in the November general election, Republican the Rev. Leon Winn.

Veteran’s Fundraiser to be held Saturday

There will be a Veteran’s Relay Fundraiser from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at Bert and Ed Levy’s place, 8624 S. Brewington Road in Manning, to raise funds for a transitional home for homeless veterans in the area. There will be a day of music, food and family fun. Walmart Relay for Life Team to hold Bake Sale Saturday

The Walmart Relay for Life Team will hold a bake sale from 8-11 a.m. Saturday at the grocery side entrance. They will have presales of Relay for Life T-shirts as well.


Severe thunderstorms possible this evening

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Clarendon County and other surrounding areas for Friday evening and night. There is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms through the night. There could be a few storms this afternoon and tonight, with the threat being damaging wind gusts and possibly hail. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in some more urban areas and along small streams.

Player signs with Methodist University

East Clarendon linebacker and tight end Daulton Player signed to play football March 11 with Methodist University, saying “it’s a beautiful campus, a great environment and the atmosphere is just amazing.”
He considered Coastal Carolina University and a few other schools and was planning on Coastal, but said Methodist won him over on his first visit. Player was joined by his parents, Vickie Ard and David Player, former coach Dwayne Howell, present coach Scott Cook and Principal Jason Cook.

The National Weather Service in Columbia has declared a Tornado Watch for Clarendon County effective through 3 p.m. Friday.
