The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association has awarded one local public servant with one of its highest honors.
Rep. Robert “Bobby” Ridgeway III was inducted March 16 into the Society of the Maltese Cross.
“As a symbol associated with fire more than 500 years, the Maltese cross brings to mind in every firefighter the traditions and values sacred and true to service to our fellow man,” association Executive Director Joe H. Palmer said. “Firefighters across South Carolina and the world proudly display the Maltese cross on their uniforms to remember and to signify servants of similar purpose.”

Miss Clarendon Teen Sara Levitt has hit the ground running to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network, which provides funds for local children’s hospitals through its network of healthcare facilities.
“The money I raise will help save children’s lives,” she said. “And a portion will also go to support the Miss America Scholarship Fund.”
Floyd said that the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals work to make sure that donated funds stay local.

This year’s session began Jan. 12. This is the second year of the 121st session, so everything that was unfinished on the agenda when we left in July 2015 was here waiting for us when we returned.
Last month was a short month for the state Senate due to the fact that we were in recess on the Thursday before Easter and also for the entire week after Easter. Olivia Ashley Bodenheimer was crowned Baby Miss Striped Bass Festival 2016 on Saturday night at Weldon Auditorium in Manning. Savannah Jeannette Haley was the 1st runner up, while Kenna Grace Eason was the 2nd runner up. Savannah was given the Most Photogenic Award during the pageant.

Sharon Cartledge has 11 years of teaching experience, all of them with Clarendon School District 2. She has been named the Manning Elementary School Teacher of the Year.
A sixth-grade teacher of English language arts and social studies, she has a bachelor of science in elementary education from Lander University and a master’s degree in divergent learning from Francis Marion University.

Sumter’s Simpson Hardware will host a boating education safety course from the state Department of Natural Resources from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 30, with Ken Cope as course instructor.
South Carolina law requires boaters younger than 16 to pass an approved boating education course before operating a personal watercraft such as a jet ski or a boat powered by a motor of 15 horsepower or more without adult supervision.

Clarendon is one of 29 counties eligible to apply for the Emergency Forest Restoration Program to address flood damage.
The program, which is being offered by the state U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, provides payments to eligible owners of nonindustrial private forest land to enable the owners to carry out emergency measures to restore land damaged by a natural disaster.
