Clyburn presents $1K to Clarendon NAACP

Congressman James Clyburn donated $1,000 to the Clarendon County branch of the NAACP on Saturday night during the group’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet in Summerton. President Julius Adger said the money will go directly to the organization’s youth fund. Young people provided service during the meal and are pictured here with Clyburn.


Wreck with injuries in front of IGA

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting a wreck with injuries in front of the Manning IGA. According to reports, there is no entrapment, but gas is leaking from one of the vehicles. Emergency responders are on scene, and traffic will likely be slower during this time.


Frierson remembered as a great

William Gregg “Billy” Frierson, who’s remembered as a great baseball and basketball player, will now be known as a Hall of Famer.
Frierson was born Feb. 13, 1933 in High Point. NC. He was a member of the Clarendon Hall School Hall of Fame, the Summerton Athletic Club and the Block “C” Club.
“I’ve faced plenty of great pitchers in my life time with the New York Yankees,” Bobby Richardson once told Frierson’s family. “There was no one tougher than Billy Frierson to get a hit off of.”

The American Legion Post 68 Auxiliary will hold an indoor yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon April 2. Items for the sale may be donated from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 1 at the legion building on Sunset Drive in Manning.

11 file thus far to run in June primaries

Candidates vying for state and county offices coming up in the June primaries began filing at noon March 16.
Filing for these offices closes noon Wednesday, leaving less than two days for candidates to make their intentions known.
Clarendon County Voter Registration and Elections Director Shirley Black-Oliver said as of Monday that 11 Clarendon residents had filed for elected office.
Half of that number who have filed thus far are incumbents, including Clarendon County Council Chairman Dwight Stewart, Clarendon County District 2 Councilman A.C. English, Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett, House District 64 Rep. Robert Ridgeway III and District 36 … Read the rest

New Covenant Pres to hold Big Deals Yard Sale on Saturday

New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway in Manning, will hold the Big Deals Yard Sale – a Youth Yard Sale – from 7 a.m. to noon April 2 at the church. All proceeds will benefit the church’s summer youth camps and programs.


Meadowfield resident gets help with damage from October flood

Summerton resident Gary Livingston was undergoing a life-changing medical procedure when the October floods decimated his unit at Meadowfield Apartments.
Livingston was specifically in the hospital, having his legs amputated. Last week, he was the final resident in the beleaguered complex to receive furniture through a grant received by the United Way of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties and the Long Term Recovery Group.

Harvin commits to football at Georgia Institute of Technology

Alcolu resident Pressley Harvin III verbally committed March 7 to play football at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Currenty a junior at Sumter High School, he was offered a full scholarship in February.
Harvin is currently ranked at the No. 1 high school punter in the nation, a position he has held for two years. He is the son of Pressley Harvin Jr. and Adrienne Harvin of Alcolu.


Wreck reported at Black River, Cousar roads

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting a wreck with no injuries at Black River and Cousar roads in Manning.
