A 62-year-old Manning man was charged with driving under the influence and liquor law violations about 11:26 p.m. Feb. 17 after police stopped him initially for speeding. According to reports from the Manning Police Department, officers spotted the man speed up to about 62 mph while passing the Manning Early Childhood Center and then pass a vehicle in the no passing zone. Asked why he was "driving so recklessly," the suspect said "he was trying to hurry and get home because he was tired," reports state. Police could "smell a very strong odor of alcohol coming from (the suspect's) breath," reports stated. Police reported that the suspect failed all field sobriety tests, and he also refused a breathalyzer test. During a search of the vehicle, police found a white foam cup containing a cinnamon-scnted liquor. The Manning Times does not print the names of suspects charged with first offense DUIs or liquor law violations.
