Local group holds meeting at Weldon

The Beta Alpha chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma held its November meeting at Weldon Auditorium, where members heard the background information on the Smithsonian traveling exhibit Hometown Teams: How Sports Shaped America.

The exhibit also showcased Clarendon County sports with a documentary and exhibits produced by students in Clarendon County.

DKG members and guests were treated to a docent led tour of the exhibit and learned how they can book time slots to bring their classes to view the exhibits. Several of our members also served as docents for the weekly hours the exhibit is open to the public.

Members had a wonderful time going through the interactive exhibits and trying out the display items. Teacher expressed interest in scheduling their classes for tours.

During our business meeting, members voted to make a $100 contribution to The Coach John Thames Scholarship Fund for basketball players who are entering the education field. These scholarships are awarded annually.

Coach Thames is the winningest girls’ basketball coach in South Carolina and his display in the

Home Town Teams exhibit was very popular.

As part of the month long celebration, Coach Thames was honored with a 81.5-year Birthday Party.

Beta Alpha members Ann English and Nancy Moore presented a check to him at this event.
