Lady Swampcats fall to Ben Lippen

The Laurence Manning Academy Lady Swampcats fell 51-50 to Ben Lippen on Tuesday night. Courtney Beatson led the team with 20 points. Brooke Bennett followed closely with 15 points. Sarah Fraser scored five points, while Cora Downer and Kaela Johnson each scored four points. Olivia Wilson scored two points.

Glenn W. Bresky of Manning scored a hole-in-one Oct. 16 on Hole No. 2 at Wyboo Golf Course with a 7-iron, qualifying for the Santee Cooper Trophy Five Award Program. JV Lady Monarchs fall to C.E. Murray

The Manning High School JV Lady Monarchs fell Tuesday night 39-21 to C.E. Murray High School’s junior varsity girls team. Kimora Hilton was the team’s leading scorer, with eight points. Kamryn Shaffer scored four points. C.E. Murray’s lead scorer was Taliyah Scott, who put up 16 points. Aaliyah Scott put up eight points for the Lady War Eagles.

PINEWOOD – Lawrence W. Green, 68, husband of Gardenia Johnson Green, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1192 White and Rivers Road in Pinewood.
Professional services are entrusted to Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton.


David Eugene Johnson

PINEWOOD – David Eugene Johnson, 57, husband of Malisa Geist Johnson, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia.
Born in Manning, he was a son of the late Cecil H. Johnson Sr. and Stella Ardis Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired farmer.
Survivors besides his wife of Columbia include three brothers, C.B. Johnson of Manning, James Leonard Johnson (Susie) of West Columbia and Harold B. Johnson (Linda) of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Josie Lee Hudson; and a brother, Cecil H. Johnson Jr.

Services for Joyce Holmes will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at Floyd Funeral Home chapel in Olanta.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. prior to the service.
Ms. Holmes died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, after a prolonged illness.
Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late William Albert Lavender and Pet Jones Lavender. She was a graduate of Salem High School and a retired accounting representative from Dr. Steven Meeks, DDS. Ms. Holmes was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

The bride is the daughter of Susan and Billy Timmons of Manning, and the granddaughter of the late Agnes and Millard Geddings, the late George Geddings, the late Alma W. Hodge and the late Archie C. Timmons. She is employed as a program coordinator with Clemson University.

ECHS student signs with USC Aiken

East Clarendon High School senior Will Ard plans to study environmental engineering at the University of South Carolina Aiken.
But the son of Ike and Lisa Ard will also be playing for the school’s baseball team. Ard signed in November to play for the school during a ceremony held in the media arts center.
Mainly a pitcher, Ard also plays all positions on the diamond for the East Clarendon High School Wolverines. He has been playing varsity since eighth grade, but has played baseball since he was 2, starting with T-ball. For USC Aiken, he will play other positions while … Read the rest

Bennie McCray

LYNCHBURG – Bennie McCray, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born April 24, 1936 in the Lynchburg section of Sumter County, he was a son of the late Mack McCray and Hazzetter Fullwood McCray.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Hayes F. and LanNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Lynchburg.
The family will receive friends at the hoe of his brother, Hallie and Marie McCray, 7965 Fullard Road in Lynchburg.

Robert W. Brockman

Robert W. Brockman, 84, died suddenly Saturday morning, Dec. 5, 2015, at his home.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a son of the late Harry and Lydia Peters Brockton. He was a graduate of Bowling Green State University. He was a self-employed certified public accountant in the Cleveland area, also serving as the finance director for the cities of Rocky River and North Olmsted in Ohio.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty; two sisters, Edna Curtis and Dorothy Figgers; and a brother, Charles Brockton.
