Spring semester classes for Clarendon County Adult Education will begin Jan. 11, 2015, at the F.E. DuBose Center in Manning, with registration for new students at 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Registration includes placement testing and Day 1 of the orientation process. Rebecca McGett Richburg, 83, wife of Moses Richburg Sr., died Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Aug. 21, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Madison and Idella McBride.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, at St. Holiness Church in Summerton. Apostle E. Madison, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at 5218 Wash Davis Road in Summerton.

DNR to hold youth duck clinic

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a great opportunity for youth to attend a duck clinic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 18, 2016, in Georgetown.
The free clinic will introduce youth ages 10-17 to the basics of duck hunting. The clinic’s hands-on sessions include: game care and prep, duck calling, marksmanship skills and how to keep it legal while hunting.
The first 25 that contact Sgt. Steve Simpson at simpsons@dnr.sc.gov and complete and return the application will be able to attend. The application will be sent by email after contact is made.

James William Broadway

SUMTER – James William “Billy” Broadway, 75, died Sunday, December 20, 2015, at McLeod Hospital.
Born February 23, 1940, in Manning, he was a son of the late James William Broadway, Sr. and the late Frances Thames Broadway. He was the owner and operator of Broadway Construction Company. He was a member of Manning First Baptist Church and he attended Alice Drive Baptist Church.

GREELEYVILLE – Robert Bernard “Tex” Woods, 59, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at his home, 1837 Eddie Woods Road in Greeleyville.
Born Jan. 12, 1956, in Greeleyville, he was a son of Albertha Scott Woods Miller and the late Eddie Woods Sr. He was a stepson of Sellers Miller.

Pinewood man appealing 22-year prison sentence for attempted murder

A 35-year-old Pinewood man sentenced in 2011 to 22 years for attempted murder and first-degree burglary is seeking post-conviction relief in 3rd Circuit Court.
Eric Quentil Tindal appeared before Circuit Court Judge Tanya A. Gee in mid-November during a hearing in which he argued that his attorney’s actions during his plea were inadequate and ineffective. He was represented by James Brian O’Connor during that plea.
Tindal was sentenced four years ago after pleading to breaking into the apartment of his former girlfriend and stabbing her multiple times on Thanksgiving Day in 2010. Both were transported to Clarendon Memorial Hospital and … Read the rest

Bills aim to close loophole that allowed Roof to buy gun

COLUMBIA (AP) — Legislation up for debate next year seeks to close the loophole that law enforcement officials say allowed Dylann Roof to buy the gun used in the Charleston massacre last summer.
Roof’s drug arrest last February should have prevented the sale, but data entry errors meant a background check didn’t produce the pertinent details in time. Federal law gives the FBI three business days to tell a gun dealer if someone can’t legally buy a firearm. Once that window expires, as in Roof’s case, the sale can proceed by default.
