Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer said there doesn't seem to be any "obvious sign of injury or foul play" on the body of a 50-year-old Manning man found early Tuesday morning by his wife just 100 yards from the couple's home on Nelson Circle.
"Right now, nothing looks suspicious, but we cannot rule anything out," Shaffer said.
An autopsy will be performed 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Shaffer said.
Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels confirmed the man's identity as that of Larry Weeks, 50. He said Weeks was found "lying in a ditch off Nelson Circle."
Shaffer said the man's wife found him about 7 a.m. while walking to her workplace, which is on East Boyce Street.
"She uses a path to get to work, and she found him while walking to work," Shaffer said. "The family told us that he left his home about 5 p.m. Monday and didn't return that night. The next time his wife saw him was when she found him."
Shaffer said the man had no known medical conditions reported by his family. He said police and investigators with the State Law Enforcement Division processed the scene at Nelson Circle from about 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, essentially blocking the area from thru-traffic.
