State, federal officials and non-profits to join Haley and Team SC on Monday

COLUMBIA – Governor Nikki Haley will host a Team South Carolina flood relief event from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Clarendon County Community Center, the old high school gymnasium behind Weldon Auditorium.
For those impacted by flooding in counties across the state, Team South Carolina events serve as one-stops where residents can find out about resources available to families and businesses as South Carolina recovers. Team South Carolina events bring together representatives from state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations to assist those in need in the wake of statewide flooding.

State Superintendent visits Clarendon 3 schools

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman visited two Clarendon School District 3 schools Thursday.
She visited first with students at Walker-Gamble Elementary School in New Zion, accompanied by Principal Sheila Floyd, Assistant Principal Tamara Alston and Clarendon School District 3 Superintendent Dr. Connie Dennis. She visited the school’s media center, a music class and several classes in each grade from K4 through fifth.

Johnson to hold Town Hall Tuesday for Q&A on flood relief

Sen. Kevin Johnson is holding a Town Hall on Tuesday to provide “a one-stop location” for folks to find relief from damages caused by the so-called 1,000-year flood.
“We’re going to have those agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the S.C. Department of Workforce and Development and the Small Business Administration, among others, who will be there so people can ask them questions,” Johnson said.
Johnson said a similar meeting was held recently in Sumter the day after Gov. Nikki Haley held a Team South Carolina event in Sumter.

James “Boy” Humes Jr., husband of Jessie Howard James, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, in Sumter.
Born Oct. 7, 1947, in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late James and Linnie Doiley Humes Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Rosa H. Dunham, 6245 Skinner Road in Gable.
Services have been entrusted to Whites Mortuary LLC.


Governor to bring Team SC to Clarendon Monday

Gov. Nikki Haley will bring the Team South Carolina initiative to Clarendon County on Monday, according to Manning Mayor Julia Nelson.
Haley and other representatives from state and federal agencies will be present from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Clarendon Community Center (the old Manning High School gymnasium), 7 Maple St. in Manning.
Team South Carolina events are serving as one-stops where residents can find out about resources available to families and businesses as South Carolina recovers from recent flooding. Items to assist flood victims will also be available.

Ethel Floyd, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at her home.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Turbeville First Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Floyd Funeral Home.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Harry Gibbons and Roxie Laney Morris Gibbons. She was a 1954 graduate of East Clarendon high School, president of her nursing class at Tuomey Nursing School from 1954-57, a registered nurse at Clarendon Memorial Hospital from 1958-66 … Read the rest

Cornelia Zelene Evans Robinson, 83, widow of H. Dallas Robinson, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born March 30, 1932, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Luther Workman Evans and Margaret Harrington Evans.
“Grandma Zene,” as she was affectionately known, was a graduate of Gable High School and was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of Midway Presbyterian Church and had recently been a resident of National Healthcare in Sumter.

Clarendon Clerk preparing for e-filing, state’s highest judge to visit Nov. 12 to implement system

The Clarendon County Clerk of Court’s Office is about to handle a lot less paperwork.
That doesn’t mean that attorneys and judges will be filing less of it; they will just be doing it a different way.
The South Carolina Supreme Court is calling for electronic filing of civil and criminal cases in the state’s circuit courts, and Clarendon County has been chosen as one of the first locations for the effort.

Major is a 12-week-old male Labrador retriever-mix puppy that is current on his shots and been neutered. He came into A Second Chance Animal Shelter with his seven siblings. They are all sweet and lovable. Stop by the shelter on Alex Harvin Highway and see these cuties from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
