SUMMERTON - Helen Elizabeth Hanley Lowery, 93, widow of William P. Boovey and Brutus Augustus Lowery, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at The Willows at Meadow Branch in Winchester, Virginia.

Born May 18, 1922, in Jersey City, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Bernard Michael Hanley and Grace Helen Kunze Hanley. At the age of 21, she joined the U.S. Navy and became a WAVE, serving in World War II. She rose to the rank of chief petty officer.

She was married to the late William P. Boovey from 1947 to 1953. After the Navy, she worked for the federal government as a secretary for over 25 years. She then retired in 1976 and married Brutus A. Lowery after having been a widow for 23 years.

She and her husband live in Summerton. After his death in 1980, she spent the rest of the next 35 years volunteering with different organizations. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Summerton.

Survivors include three children, Elizabeth Boovey of Stephens City, Virginia, Patricia Rogers (Frank) of White Post, Virginia, and William Boovey (Nancy Barlow) of Cortez, Colorado; three grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass for Helen Elizabeth Hanley Lowery will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 2205 State Park Road in Santee, with Father Maximino Tria Jr. officiating.

Entombment will follow in Orangeburg Memorial Park cemetery.

A rosary service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at Stephens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 14 Cantey Street, Summerton, SC 29148.
