Jesse Carter Sr., husband of Carolyn S. Carter, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at his home, after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 28, 1954, in the Hallietown section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Henry Carter and Annie Mae Oliver Carter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Henrietta Carter Dobson and Roxie Mae Carter Johnson.

At an early age he joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church.

He attended Clarendon County School District 2 schools, graduating from Manning High School. He was also a graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg, where he received a bachelor's degree in early childhood education in 1980. He became a member of Omicron Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Jesse was employed by Clarendon School District 2 as a special needs teacher for five years. He also worked for the South Carolina Forestry Commission for two years. In addition, Jesse also worked at Jomac-Wells Lamont as shift supervisor for 16 years.

Jesse met the love of his life, the former Carolyn Snider, at Claflin University. Later, they were joined in holy matrimony and were blessed with a lovely daughter, LaRhonda Gamble, and a dedicated son, Jesse Carter Jr.

Jesse, or Jed, as he was so affectionately called, was a man of faith. He was a caring, trustworthy, devoted husband, loving father and friend. He loved to take slow rides down the long winding rural dirt roads listening to music. Jesse also enjoyed sitting outside delighting in the beauty and calmness of nature. He devoted much of his time providing service to those who needed his help.

Survivors besides his wife include a caring daughter LaRhonda (Demeatric) Gamble of Waldorf, Maryland; a devoted son Jesse Carter Jr. of Orangeburg; his adoring grandchildren, Adara Gamble, Marlon Carter, Janasia Carter, Darien Gamble, Tavion Carter, Donovan Gamble and Malachi Bennett; his brothers, James (Tinnie) Carter, Willie (Daisy) Carter, LeVan Carter, Charles Carter, all of Manning; his sisters, Edith Dingle of Manning, Annie Palmer of Durham, North Carolina, Juanita (James) Harrington-Leach of Bennetsvile, Alice (Jimmy) Caldwell of Bowie, Maryland; several brothers-in-law; several sisters-in-law; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Celebratory services for Jesse Carter Sr. will be held noon Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

Mr. Carter will lie in repose one hour prior to services.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2590 Hector-Walker Road in Manning.

Services for Jesse Carter Sr. have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
