Manning Mayor Julia Nelson presented an official proclamation on Wednesday to the Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, recognizing Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week in the city of Manning. Accepting the official document was chapter Constitution Week Chairwoman Lib Cherry. Constitution Week is the commemoration of America's most important document, and is celebrated annually from Sept. 17-23. The U.S. Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights. This celebration of the Constitution began through work of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned U.S. Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by Congress and signed into public law on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The DAR have also erected a structure that is built in tribute to the Constitution of the United States, DAR Constitution Hall, a performing arts center that opened in 1929. Cherry said the aims of Constitution Week include: Emphasizing citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; Informing people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and Encouraging the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
