Ula Shawn Long

Ula Shawn Long died Friday, July 30, 2015.

Born in 1958, she was a daughter of Ula Doris Hornikel of Summerton and the late Stephen Frederick Hornikel. She was a boisterous child who became a ballerina, gymnast and lifeguard at Shenandoah pool by the age of 12, and was also an accomplished horseback rider. She truly lived.

Her humor was unmatchable. Ula found no greater joy than with her children John Aubrey Long and Dawn Victoria Long, both of Miami, Florida. She was extremely proud of them.

Survivors besides her children and mother of Summerton include two sisters, Todd Tamara Cummins and Pamela Samara Cummins, both of Atlanta, Georgia; four nephews, Blake Ribbey of New York, James Martin of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Robert Martin and Jake Hook, both of Atlanta.

Ula's friends and neighbors were like family to her. Her colleagues at Kendal Regional Medical Center and South Miami Hospital were held close to her heart, as were many families, especially the babies that she helped deliver and the moms she helped as their lactation specialist.

Ula deeply loved India and will be missed by many there, most especially the Mane family.

Ula had a familial friendship with everyone at Ruben's Restaurant, which was her home away from home.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, in the Maya Garden at Kendal Regional Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade, 7205 N.W. 19th St., Suite 500, Miami, FL, 33126.
