Ulysses Francis

GABLE – Ulysses Francis, 63, husband of Marolyn Williams Francis, died Sunday, May 31, 2015, at his home, 1347 Bosie Lewis Road in Gable.
Born Oct. 29, 1951, in Gable, he was a son of Susan Virginia Nelson Francis and the late Robert Francis.
Memorial services for Ulysses Francis will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Services for Ulysses Francis have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC

CCTC recognizes Clarendon students on Part-Time Dean’s List

Central Carolina Technical College President Dr. Tim Hardee announced Thursday that 28 Clarendon County residents made the college’s 2015 Spring Part-time Dean’s List, which recognizes students enrolled in six to 11 credit hours who achieved at least a 3.5 GPA for the term.

CCTC names nine to Full-Time Dean’s List

Central Carolina Technical College President Dr. Tim Hardee has announced Spring 2015 student honors lists. This term, 379 students have been honored, of which 350 are residents of Sumter, Lee, Clarendon or Kershaw Counties.
Central Carolina Technical College President Dr. Tim Hardee announced Thursday that nine Clarendon County residents made the college’s 2015 Spring Full-time Dean’s List.

SUMTER – Central Carolina Technical College President Dr. Tim Hardee announced Thursday that 10 Clarendon County residents were named to the college’s 2015 Spring Full-time President’s List, which recognizes students enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours and also achieved a 4.0 GPA for the term.

BOLO issued for Williamsburg County suspect

Clarendon County dispatchers have issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for a 33-year-old Williamsburg County man named Demetrius A. Gamble.
He is described as 5-foot-8 and 215 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair. He is described as armed and dangerous, and is wanted for kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Anyone with information is asked to notify the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 435-4414 or other authorities by dialing 911 immediately.

Alcolu man charged with CSC pleads to assault and battery, gets 3 years

A 33-year-old Alcolu man charged Oct. 17 with third-degree criminal sexual conduct pleaded guilty Monday in 3rd Circuit Court to a lesser charge of first-degree assault and battery.
Circuit Court Judge Robert E. Hood sentenced William Glenn Barrett II of 1148 Pinecrest Acres in Alcolu to three years in prison after Barrett’s plea.
According to a report from the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office, a lady told deputies about 3:24 a.m. Oct. 1 that Barrett entered her home, stuck his hand in her pants and fondled her genital area. The victim said she woke up to find the suspect tugging at … Read the rest


James Green Jr.

SUMMERTON – James Green Jr., 56, husband of Esther Bowman Green, died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Born Sept. 24, 1958, in Summerton, he was a son of the late James and Sarah Green.
The family will receive friends at the home, 12305 Panola Road in Summerton.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by King-Fields Mortuary of Summerton.


Robert Lyle Bennett

SUMMERTON – Robert Lyle Bennett, 81, husband of Constance Rybnikar Bennett, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Born Aug. 22, 1933, in West Belmar, N.J., he was a son of the late Ira Lyle and Louise Gardiner Bennett. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Wa, and was a member of American Legion Post 35; Woodmen of the World; and St. Matthias Episcopal Church.

McKnight announces annual scholarships, MHS senior one of four finalists

Cezar E. McKnight announced Wednesday four winners of his annual Law Office of Cezar E. McKnight Scholarship. Each student received $500 from McKnight.

State Vet: Vaccinate horses now for mosquito-borne illnesses

State Veterinarian and Clemson University Livestock Poultry Health Director Boyd Parr said earlier this week that horse owners should be vigilant in maintaining current vaccinations for Eastern equine encephalitis, West Nile virus and rabies.
Parr said South Carolina led the country in 2013 with its 49 confirmed cases of EEE, a serious, and often fatal mosquito-borne illness in horses that can also affect humans.
Clarendon County had four such cases in 2014. The number fell to just seven statewide in 2014, with none for Clarendon, in large part to the vaccinations, Parr said.

Florida woman charged for stealing, returning Sunbeam mixer

Tierika Vonquita Gamble, 20, of 501 Southwest 15th Street, No. 202, in Homestead, Florida, was charged about 2:45 p.m. April 14 at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway with shoplifting after an employee told the Manning Police Department she witnessed the suspect allegedly taking a Sunbeam mixer valued at $74.52 from a shelf.
The suspect then allegedly took the item straight to the store’s service center for a refund to put on a gift card.


Hope for Haigan, Candy for Gandy: District raises funds for coach’s wife

Last September, Haigan Jordan Gandy was living life just the way she planned.
She had just married the love of her life, Justin, and was teaching art at a small private school in Sumter.
“Justin and I got married Sept. 20, 2014, and just a little more than a month later was when I found out I had the brain tumor,” Gandy said.
Haigan was diagnosed Oct. 31, 2014, but she’d experienced symptoms for at least five months before that.

BMW damaged on Burnt Branch Road

A 22-year-old Charleston woman told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 8:52 p.m. May 23 that someone broke the windows of her 2004 BMW, causing about $500 in damages, between 6 p.m. May 22 and the time of her complaint, while the vehicle was parked on Burnt Branch Road in Turbeville. The woman said her boyfriend told her the car had broken down in that area about 6 p.m. May 22, and the damage happened before they could get back to retrieve the vehicle.
