A 24-year-old Manning man was arrested about 12:45 a.m. June 7 at a safety checkpoint in the area of Boyce and Boundary streets and charged with drug and gun offenses.
According to reports from the Manning Police Department, Corey Michael Phillips, 24, of 1235 Hector Walker Road in Manning, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, second offense, and unlawful carrying of a handgun.
Cpl. W.B. Secrist II first approached the vehicle and reported smelling “a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.” The suspect was removed from the vehicle and asked if he had any marijuana, which the suspect answered in the negative.
A search of the vehicle did not produce marijuana, but Secrist located on the suspect four clear plastic bags of suspected marijuana and a set of digital scales. He also found a clear plastic bag containing two round white pills with no markings.
Secrist also found a loaded Highpoint semi-automatic handgun, and learned through Clarendon County Dispatch that Phillips has several prior convictions for unlawfully carrying of a handgun and at least one conviction for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Reports indicate that Phillips was on parole for those charges at the time of his arrest with the Clarendon County Department of Probation and Parole.
