Legion honors fallen comrades at Courthouse

Members of the American Legion Post No. 68 gathered at the 11th hour Monday to celebrate their fellow comrades who gave their all in the fight for freedom.
Commander George Barnett received a plaque for 60 years of outstanding service in the legion.
“Today, I remember why I am here, and what was done for me to be here,” Barnett said. “Without these men and women, I wouldn’t be where I am today. A lot of people lost their lives, or suffered great injuries.”
Barnett said he was proud and thankful he came back.

Blanche Kennedy Brown

Blanche Kennedy Brown, 82, widow of Peter Brown, died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 21, 1932 in Gable, she was a daughter of the late Milton Kennedy and Sadie Cousar Kennedy.
The family will receive friends at her home, 106 Richard St. in Manning.


Warren McFadden

EFFINGHAM – Warren McFadden, 68, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Feb. 10, 1947, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of the late Harden McFadden and Annie McFadden McFadden.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Phyllis McCollough, 3831 Cherry Johnson Road in Effingham.
Funeral services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.


2 helicopters called out for boat wreck on lake

Clarendon County dispatchers have reported Monday afternoon a boat wreck in the Taw Caw area of Lake Marion. According to a report, two helicopters were called to the area. Capt. Robert McCullough with the state Department of Natural Resources says there is someone with a broken leg from the incident.

Adult Ed celebrates graduates

Clarendon County Adult Education recognized more than 20 graduates of the Class of 2015 during commencement ceremonies held May 14 at the F.E. DuBose Center in Manning.

FLORENCE — Emma Walker Graham, 61, died Friday, May 22, 2015, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. She was born May 10, 1954, in St. Stephens. She’s the daughter of the late J.K. Walker and Eva Brayboy Walker.
The family will be receiving friends at the home of her sister, Minnie Ruth Walker Johnson, 2105 Wilford Drive in Florence.

Memorial Day services

Clarendon County residents have the opportunity to participate in three separate Memorial Day services, all of them at 11 a.m. Monday.
The American Legion Post No. 68 will hold its ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday on the Clarendon County Courthouse grounds. The Douglas and Black River American Legion will host theirs at the same time at Dogwood Park in Summerton. The Turbeville Ruritan Club will host theirs the same time at the Veteran’s Monument in Turbeville.

SECC students participate in math program

Seventy-one students in the 21st Century Afterschool Program at Summerton Early Childhood Center participated in IXL Math Online Learning Community from mid-February through May 11. Students were able to practice activities that reinforce Common Core standards that were taught during the instructional day. Several students completed 105,000 math problems and logged 400 hours under the direction of Ann Blackman.
All of the students in the Math Club did well, but there were nine Rockstars that rocked the math problems. Each of the high-performing Rockstars was presented with a certificate at the end-of-year celebration on May 7 … Read the rest

Graham retains seat on Area 6 for Advisory Council

Moye Graham wears many hats in the Clarendon community and in the state at-large.
He is on his third term as the Clarendon County GOP chairman, and also serves as chairman for the 6th District for the state GOP.
Graham was reappointed recently to the South Carolina Advisory Council on Aging, and will once again represent Area 6.
“That’s the Santee Lynches Region, which consists of Clarendon, Sumter, Lee and Kershaw counties,” Graham said. “I want to build a relationship with all or at least some of the programs that help the senior citizens in my area.”

Group honors late member, celebrates anniversary

American Legion Post 68 Ladies Auxiliary President Tracy Ann Woodbury said a few weeks ago that Betty Smith “was a name that became synonymous” with both the group and its charitable contributions to the community.
The group came together April 7 at the Manning American Legion Hut on Sunset Drive to name its Palmetto Girls State Fund in her honor.
“She was instrumental in Palmetto Girls State here in Manning, and we’ve gathered here to acknowledge her hard work and accomplishments,” Woodbury said during a ceremony where the auxiliary celebrated Smith and celebrated its own founding 75 years ago.

Annie Lou Matthews

OLANTA — Annie Lou Matthews, 93, widow of Wade Olee Matthews, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 22, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home.
The family will greeted friends for an hour prior to services.
Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd Elijah Broad and Daisy Mims Broad. She retired from Florence County School District 3, where she was the cafeteria manager, and was a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Resident seeks donations for Camp Happy Days

Charleston-based charity Camp Happy Days has been providing kids with cancer and their siblings a unique experience at Camp Bob Cooper for more than three decades.
And Bill Ellis and his former coworkers have been helping out in their communities for more than two-thirds of that time, seeking donations for the kids who attend Happy Days each year.
Ellis has kicked off his local campaign to seek donations for the camp, which will be held June 28-July 4.
Ellis started helping about 1993, he said.
