If you’re traveling down South Chyrch Street today, you should expect traffic delays. The city is working on pipes and sidewalks on the side where DSS and the Council on Aging are. The street has been reduced to one lane in those areas.


Golf tournament to benefit Melissa Brunson

Clarendon EMS employees are organizing a golf tournament to raise money for co-worker Melissa Brunson, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The tournament will be held July 31 at Wyboo Golf Course, 2565 Players Course Drive in Manning.
The 18-hole tournament will feature four-man teams, with participation cost at $50 per player or $200 per team. Sponsors are $100 per hole. For more information, call (803) 795-2145 or (803) 464-2852.

Service back for some, still spotty for others

Farmers Telephone Coooperative has reported technical difficulties which have made it difficult for customers to make and receive both wireless and landline phone calls this morning.
According to Public Relations Director Chip Chase, wireless service in most areas in the company’s jurisdiction has been restored.
“Rest assured our technicians are giving the matter their undivided attention,” Chase said. “We ask for your patience as we work to resolve the trouble.”
According to other reports, service for other carriers – including Verizon, Sprint and StraightTalk – is also experiencing difficulty. Manninglive.com will have more information when it becomes available.

Cell service down for all carriers

Local authorities are reporting cell phone service out for all carriers in the Manning, Turbeville and Sumter area. No reason or estimated repair time is available at this time. Sprint customers, however, have told Manninglive.com that they have service in the area.

Woman: Ex-boyfriend shot at her car in nightclub parking lot

A 30-year-old woman told the Manning Police Department about 11:24 p.m. May 12 that her 32-year-old ex-boyfriend pointed a gun and shot at her as she drove away from the Browntown Social Club parking lot shortly before the time of her call to 911.
The woman said her ex-boyfriend had called her earlier that night to demand she stay home and not go out with her girlfriends. She said he showed up to the nightclub, and approached her vehicle.

SUMMERTON – Robert Lyle Bennett, 81, husband of Constance Rybnikar Bennett, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Carolinas Hospital System.
Born Aug. 22, 1933, in West Belmar, N.J., he was the son of the late Ira Lyle Bennett and Louise Gardiner Bennett. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 35, Woodmen of the World and St. Matthias Episcopal Church.

Manning man charged with being a habitual traffic offender

A 38-year-old Manning man was arrested about 12:10 p.m. May 19 and charged with driving under suspension, third or subsequent offense, and being a habitual traffic offender.
According to a report from Manning Police Department Cpl. W.B. Secrist II, he stopped Cleoza Gibbs Jr., 38, of 1384 Tuttle Drive in Manning, after noticing the suspect was driving without wearing a seatbelt. A check through dispatch showed Gibbs’ license was suspended and that he is labeled as a habitual offender by the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Raybits scores hole-in-one at Wyboo

SANTEE – Pat Raybits of Manning scored a hole-in-one May 5 on Hole No. 2 at the Wyboo Golf Club in Manning.
Raybits entered his feat in the Santee Cooper Country Hole-in-One Award Program and will receive a parchment signed and sealed by Gov. Nikki R. Haley.

Pine straw fire under train at Georgia Pacific

The Clarendon County Fire Department is currently responding to a report of pine straw on fire underneath a train at the Georgia Pacific plant. According to reports, the train itself is not on fire, just the pine straw.

MHS announces parking plans for graduation

Administrators at Manning High School have announced the school’s parking plan for 2015 commencement ceremonies, which will be held 9 a.m. June 6 in the school’s Ramsey Stadium.
“There will be designated parking spaces for graduates and guests,” said Coach Franklin D. Ladson. “Graduates only will be allowed to park in the back of the school behind the gymnasium.”
Ladson said each graduate will have one parking pass and must present that pass to park behind the gym.

LAKE CITY – Lillian G. Kirby, 86, beloved widow of Mack Oneal Kirby, died peacefully at McLeod Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.
Born Sept. 18, 1928, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie Gibbons. She was a faithful member of Hebron Independent Methodist Church. She loved the outdoors, planting flowers and working in the yard.
She spent hours of her time communicating with her Savior through reading the scriptures.
She was a great cook and wil be missed by her family and friends.

$500 worth of jewelry stolen from Mallett Road home

Miscellaneous costume jewelry valued at $500 was reportedly stolen fro a home in the 2800 block of Mallett Road in Manning between 7 a.m. May 15 and 11 a.m. May 17. The 54-year-old owner of the home told the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 11 a.m. May 17 that she came home to find her front door open and damaged. She said her master bedroom door was also halfway broken, and that a jewelry box had been opened, with one of the small drawers and its contents missing.

Sumter men injured in Taw Caw boat wreck

Capt. Robert McCullough with the state Department of Natural Resources said three Sumter men were injured, two severely, when their 15-foot bass boat ran aground in the Taw Caw area of Lake Marion.
“We are still investigating the cause of the wreck and what caused the men to run aground,” McCullough said.
Two were airlifted to Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia by helicopter.
“One had head and leg injuries, while the other had rib and chest injuries,” McCullough said. “They were in stable, but serious condition.”
