Ruth Devoe Wright

Ruth Devoe Wright, 81, widow of Charlie Wright Sr., died Tuesday, May 26, 2015.
Born May 2, 1934, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Sarah Devoe (Charlie Sr.) Davis. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She retired from Campbell Soup. She was a life member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the Missionary Circle 3, the YWA, Trustee Wives, Pastor’s Aid, Hospitality and Gospel Choir Ministries.

Yard Sale on Medina Drive

There will be a Yard Sale at 1069 Medina Drive from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The sale comes from a consolidation of two houses, so there will be lots of stuff to buy.


Emma Erickson recognized for Accelerated Reader points

Louise McFadden Billie, 64, died Wednesday morning, May 27, 2015, at her home.
Born Oct. 31, 1950, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Katherine McFadden.
The family will receive friends and relatives at her home, 817 Miller Road in Sumter.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

EFFINGHAM – Warren McFadden, 68, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Feb. 10, 1947, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of the late Harden McFadden and Annie McFadden McFadden.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, at Bible Way of Florence. Burial will follow in Old McFadden Cemetery in Lake City.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Phyllis McCollough, 3831 Cherry Johnson Road in Effingham.
Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Manning High School’s Class of 2015 got an unexpected surprise Wednesday night during a baccalaureate service sponsored by the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Former Gamecock football player Marcus Lattimore was the ceremony’s guest speaker, and encouraged the graduating seniors to always look to God in their college and after-college lives.
“Nobody can take this moment from you, your graduating from high school,” Lattimore said. “Let’s face the facts: We live in South Carolina, where 40 percent don’t graduate. District 2 summer meals

Clarendon School District 2 will once again offer free summer meals for children 18 and younger in the community at Manning Elementary and Manning High schools Mondays through Thursdays throughout June and July, starting June 8.
The times will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Manning Elementary and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manning High.
A morning snack will be offered 9-10 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Manning Elementary School.

FLORENCE – Emma Walker Graham, 61, died Friday, May 22, 2015, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Born May 10, 1954, in St. Stephens, she was a daughter of the late J.K. Walker and Eva Brayboy Walker.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Spoken Word Tabernacle in Coward. Burial followed in New McFadden Cemetery in Olanta.
The family received friends at the home of her sister, Minnie Ruth Walker Johnson, 2105 Wilford Drive in Florence.
Services were entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Black River Legion announces candidates for boys’ summer camp

The Black River American Legion Post No. 149 of New Zion has announced its delegates for 2015 Palmetto Boys State, which will be held June 7-13 at Anderson University in Anderson.
“There will be more than 1,000 delegates arriving to register beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, and they will be released the following Saturday at 10:30 a.m., after graduation exercises, room inspections and room keys are turned into their counselors,” according to a release from the legion post.

Black River Legion auxiliary announces delegates to girls’ summer camp

The Black River American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 149 proudly announced last week its delegates for 2015 Palmetto Girls State.
“These young ladies will participate in the one-week leadership and citizenship training program, created to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government,” according to a release from the auxiliary. “They will experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections and the political process, along with about 560 other delegates from across the state.”
The delegates are Brooklyn Lacey Fort and Ashlee Lineberger.

GREELEYVILLE – Curtis Lynn Mason Sr., 71, husband of Virginia M. Mason, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born November 13, 1943, he was a son of the late Eugene Russ Mason and Mildred Hagan Mason. He was a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church. He was a retired manager with the Wise Company. He was the former owner and operator of “The Gun Trader” in Greeleyville.
His grandchildren gave him the name “Grandy” that became the name everyone knew him by.

Mayor, women seek help for woman burned out of home

Manning Mayor Julia Nelson and two other local woman are looking for help for Carrie L. Hilton, whose home was destroyed by fire Monday.
“Everything was destroyed,” said Nelson on Facebook. “I’m making this post in the hope that someone will be able to help this family.”
Joining Nelson in the cause are Ella Dingle and Kim Hilton-Holloway, Hilton’s daughter. Nelson said a double-wide mobile home has been donated from Alcolu.
“They also need everything you can imagine if your home was destroyed, except clothing, which has been donated,” she said.

Break-in at Washington Street home in Summerton

The 79-year-old owner of a home in the 1000 block of Washington Street in Summerton told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 5:15 p.m. May 15 that someone forced open her front door sometime between 4 p.m. that day and the time of her complaint. The woman told deputies that nothing appeared to be taken from the home.
Deputies reported that the front door jamb was broken out and the deadbolt was still in the locked position.
