James Pearson, 83, died Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 20, 1932, in Davis Station, he was a son of the late Levi Sr. and Viola Clark Pearson. He was a member of Historic Mount Zion AME Church in Summerton, where he was a member of the male chorus and Gospel Train. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Scott's Branch High School in Summerton. James was one of the Pearson children named in the Levi Pearson V. Clarendon County Board of Education and School District No. 26 in 1947, the case that ultimately turned into Briggs v. Elliott. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.

While living in Florida for several years, he was employed with the City of Miami Dade County Sanitation Department.

Wake services for James Pearson will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at the funeral home.

Funeral services for James Pearson will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Mt. Zion AME Church, 6547 M.W. Rickenbaker Road in Summerton, with Pastor Courtney Colleton as eulogist, assisted by the Rev. O'Donald Dingle and the Rev. Jerial Dingle.

Burial will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1853 L&H Pearson Road in Manning.

Services for James Pearson have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
