Library to close for Bass Festival

The Harvin Clarendon County Library will close Saturday for the Striped Bass Festival events to be held in downtown Manning, and will reopen for normal hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 27. The book drop will be available for the return of unrestricted materials.

Santee-Wateree Expo on Sunday

The Santee-Wateree Expo Committee will present its 41st Santee-Wateree Expo at 4 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 105 Dinkins St. in Manning. The event has brought past speakers such as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson, NASA astronauts Ronald E. McNair and Chalres Bolden; Sen. Maggie W. Glover; U.S. Marshals Israel Brooks and John Marshall; Congressman James Clyburn; and Clarendon County natives F. Renee gaters, Lt. Col. Alexander Conyers, Sen. Kevin Johnson and S.C. Public Safety Director Leroy Smith.

Pinewood Baptist Church Homecoming and Golden Age Sunday

Pinewood Baptist Church, 10 E. Fulton St. in Pinewood, will hold Homecoming and Golden Age Sunday on May 3, starting at 10 a.m. with Sunday school, followed at 11 a.m. by morning worship services. All seniors will be honored. Special music will be provided, and a covered-dish lunch will follow services. All are welcome, and a nursery will be provided. Kinslee Rae Duke was named Petite Miss Striped Bass Festival on Saturday at Weldon, while Lauren A’Nisa Parker was 1st runner-up and Natalee Makenzie Taylor was 2nd runner-up. Five girls competed overall.

Robert Franklyn Strunk, 81, widower of Barbara Line Strunk, died Monday, April 20, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 5, 1933, in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Lewis Charles Strunk III and Helen Maude Ryan Strunk. He was a U.S. Army veteran, he traveled extensively and lived abroad for four years. He loved teaching school, which he did for more than 40 years in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and South Carolina. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Taw Caw plans Evening of Fashion and Fun

The Taw Caw Community Outreach Center will hold an Evening of fashion and Fun at 4 p.m. May 16 at the Taw Caw Community Outreach Center, 1126 Granby Lane in Summerton. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. They may be purchased at the door.

SUMMERTON – Barbara McCraw Carlton, 82, wife of John David Carlton Jr., died Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1932, in Gaffney, she was a daughter of the late Shuford Edward McCraw and Lucy Whiten McCraw. She retired from the town of Summerton in 1994 as assistant to the mayor, and she owned Carlton’s Christian Bookstore in Summerton. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Blue Bell frozen products recalled due to possible contamination

BRENHAM, Texas (AP) – Blue Bell Ice Cream of Brenham is voluntarily recalling all its products on the market, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks, “because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes,” a release from the company states.
“(It is) an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the release states.
Blue Bell officials said Monday that they were taking no chances.

JV Lady Saints defeat Cathedral Academy

The Clarendon Hall JV Lady Saints picked up a four-inning win over Cathedral Academy Monday in Summerton, 23-7. The JV Lady Saints were led by Lauren Pifer and Hannah Corbet, who each went 4-4 at the plate with five RBI. Ava English ended the night with three RBI. Madison Kidd picked up the win on the mound while going 3-3 at the plate with two RBI. The JV Lady Saints are now 5-6 on the season and 4-4 in region play.


Wee Miss Striped Bass Festival Contestants

Charleston Irene Hodge was named Wee Miss Striped Bass Festival 2015 on Saturday at Weldon Auditorium. She was also most photogenic. Halle Reese Tisdale was 1st runner-up, while Ty’Layah Janai Jacobs was 2nd runner-up. Charleston was crowned by Wee Miss Striped Bass 2014 Korbyn Lei Hardy, Miss Striped Bass Festival 2014 Claudia Lee Watts and Miss Clarendon Pre-teen 2015 Addison Hicks.

Animal advocates lobby S.C. lawmakers to strengthen animal protection laws

South Carolinians met March 28 with local lawmakers to lobby for better animal welfare laws across the state in celebration of Humane Lobby Day 2015.
Attendees supported bills to ban the use of gas chambers and increase penalties for cockfighting.
The Humane Society of the United States sponsored Humane Lobby Day, in cooperation with several local South Carolina animal shelters, including A Second Chance Animals Shelter of Clarendon County.
