The Manning Lions Club will hold its annual Fish Fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today and Friday at Manning Restaurant.


‘Paws for a Cause’ to raise funds during festival

The festival that brings everyone to Clarendon County will once again feature a dog show to help raise funds for children with developmental disabilities.
The Clarendon Civitan Club and the Lakewood High School Junior Civital Club will join together Friday at the Clarendon County Gazebo on Keitt Street in Manning for the 2nd annual Paws for a Cause Fun Dog Show.
Registration will be from 6-6:45 p.m. Friday, with judging at 6:50 p.m., and winners announced at 7 p.m. There will be a tent in the parking lot beside the Gazebo where the contest will be held.

Nancy June Oliver, 86, widow of Leon Oliver, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born June 29, 1928, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Furman and Katie Neal June.
The family will receive friends at the home, 40 W. Patricia Drive in Sumter.
Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced later by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.


Say hello to Firefighter Joseph Stukes

Joseph Whitworth Stukes has bee with the Clarendon County Fire Department for about two years, with the rank of Firefighter II. He said he chose to volunteer “to give back to my community.” An environmental consultant by trade, Stukes said his biggest accomplishment with the department is being named Firefighter of the Year in 2014.

COLUMBIA – The Rev. Lou Ella Bradley Samuel, widow of Willie Lee Samuel, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Born April 22, 1927, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late William and Katie McKnight Bradley.
A service of remembrance for the Rev. Lou Ella Bradley Samuel will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at Salvation Ministries Christian Life Center, 625 W. Huggins St. in Manning, where the Rev. Cheryl Graham serves as pastor.

SUMMERTON – Blondell Louise Bennett Bannister died Saturday, April 18, 2015.
A public viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the funeral home.
Funeral services for Blondell Louise Bennett Bannister will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at Prayer House Mission, 5076 Bald Eagle Road in Summerton, with Pastor Eartha Carter and Bishop Darrell McFadden as eulogists, assisted by Bishop Jeffery Johnson and Ministers Barry Ragin, Roberta Pendergrass and Christopher Felder.
Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

Johnny Henry Pearson Jr.

Johnny Henry Pearson Jr. died Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
He was a 1985 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, and was presently employed at Santee Automotive as a sales representative. He was a member of Macedonia Fire Baptized Holiness Church in the Silver community of Clarendon County, where he served on the trustee board, finance committee and usher board. The Rev. Ethel W. Sweat is the host pastor.

$600 worth of cigarettes stolen from S.C. 260 store

The 28-year-old owner of a store in the 10500 block of S.C. 260 in Manning told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 8:04 a.m. April 18 that someone took eight reels valued at $20 each, about $600 in cigarettes and $200 in cash between the nighttime hours of April 17 and when he opened the store about 7:12 a.m.April 18. The man said a window previously boarded up had been tampered with.

Man bails on towing company after employee unlocks car

A 53-year-old employee of a Manning towing company told the Manning Police Department about 10:57 p.m. April 12 that a 24-year-old Manning man called to have his car unlocked and then jumped in his car without paying for the service, which was about $85. The victim said the incident happened in the 100 block of Major Drive in Manning about 10 p.m. the day of his complaint. He said the car was a dark green LTD driven by a 6-foot-tall black male weighing about 172 pounds.

Family sets up scholarship in memory of Miss Striped Bass Festival 1985

photoMary Elizabeth “Beth” Thompson Gutstein’s sisters aren’t entirely sure why their sister entered the Miss Striped Bass Festival Pageant in 1985, what was her senior year at Manning High School.
“She had been in the Miss Manning High Pageant all throughout high school,” said Lanelle McLeod. “She never won the whole pageant, but she would win for the class. Back then, you had to be selected by your home room to compete. I don’t know if that’s still the case today. I don’t know why she competed in the Striped Bass pageant. USC Sumter to hold Campus Day for high school seniors

Pilot Club visits SECC

The Clarendon Pilot Club Brain Minders visited Summerton Early Childhood Center recently to provide music, games and a puppet show to highlight day-to-day events that may expose a child’s brain to danger. The focus of such activities is to teach children how to be brain safe at all times, as brain safety is one of the main goals of the Pilot Club.

Scott’s Branch students celebrate completion of Third Quarter

Students at Scott’s Branch Middle-High School celebrated the completion of the 3rd quarter for the 2014-15 school year with an Awards Day Program held April 9 in the school’s gymnasium. Scott’s Branch Middle School Teacher of the Year Jasmine Matterson-Bailey challenged students by breaking down the word “success” into an acrostic standing for Self Government, Understanding, Choices, Challenge, Excellence, Striving and Starting Over. Students who were honored made the Superintendent’s and Principal’s lists, along with those who earned Perfect Attendance awards.
