There were 10 contestants competing Saturday night at Weldon for the title of Miss Striped Bass Festival 2015. Mari Elizabeth Richburg was crowned queen at the conclusion of the competition.


CCTC receives grants to address tobacco use on campus

SUMTER – Central Carolina Technical College Thursday its plan to join a national movement addressing smoking and tobacco use on community college campuses throughout the United States.
Through a $5,000 grant from Legacy, a national public health organization responsible for the national Truth Smoking Prevention Program, CCTC will encourage students, faculty and school administrators to adopt a 100-percent smoke- and tobacco-free policy in Fall 2016.

Sabrina Nicole Powers was crowned Saturday as Miss Striped Bass Festival Teen 2015 at Weldon Auditorium in Manning, among a field of 16 lovely young women. First runner-up was Savannah Caroline Johnson, who was also the photogenic winner; and 2nd runner-up was Kali Irene Carter. We will have more pictures throughout Sunday.

SAFE adds four regional branch director positions; Huckeba to oversee Region 2

SAFE Federal Credit Union announced Friday the addition of four regional branch director positions to its organizational charge. The positions include the promotion of Drew Huckeba to Region 2 branch director, which includes SAFE locations in Manning, Shaw Air Force Base, Wesmark Boulevard and his own Oswego Highway Branch.
A Sumter native, Huckeba is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He has been with SAFE since 2012.

Video games, tablet stolen from Crayton Heights Road home

A 32-year-old man living in the 1100 block of Crayton Heights Road in Manning told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 6:30 p.m. April 7 that someone entered his home and took two Playstation 4 games – Madden 25 and NBA 2K14 – and an eight-inch Windows tables, altogether valued at $180, sometime between 7 a.m. that day and the time of his complaint.

Laurence Manning Academy senior Mari Elizabeth Richburg was named Miss Striped Bass Festival 2015 on Saturday night at Weldon Auditorium in a field of 10 lovely young women, which included 1st runner-up Madison Laine Coker, also photogenic winner; 2nd runner-up Hailey Marie Anderson; and 3rd runner-up Hannah Henshaw. We will have more photos from Saturday’s pageant throughout the day Sunday.

COLUMBIA – On Saturday, April 18, 2015, the Rev. Louella Bradley Samuel, widow of the late Willis Lee Samuel, exchanged her rugged cross for her precious crown at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Born April 22, 1927, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late William and Katie McKnight Bradley.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 1151 Innsbrook Drive in Manning.
Funeral services are incomplete and shall be announced by the Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home and Chapel.

State license plates to change again

COLUMBIA – South Carolina license plates featuring a sunrise will come to an end as early as 2018, according to The State newspaper.
“It’s out of here,” S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles director Kevin Shwedo said of the state’s 7-year-old tag, which some drivers dislike because it appears to have Clemson University’s school colors.
The state agency will roll out new plates over the next six years with a standard template used for all 4.2 million state tags — even plates that, for an extra fee, promote colleges, professions and social causes.

JV Lady Saints defeat Andrew Jackson

The Clarendon Hall JV Lady Saints picked up a region victory with a score of 12-8 over Andrew Jackson Academy in Erhardt Friday.
Summer Barnes led the Lady Saints, picking up two hits in three at-bats and two RBI. Lauren Pifer added two hits and an RBI and Madison Kidd went 1-2 with two RBI.
Glennda Kay Broadway picked up the win on the mound and also went 1-3 at the plate with two RBI. The team’s overall record is now 4-6, and 4-4 in region play. They will play again 4 p.m. Monday at home against Cathedral Academy.


Walter Kennon Thigpen

Walter Kennon Thigpen, 63, died Saturday, April 4, 2015, at his home.
Born March 23, 1952, in Florence, he was a son of the late James Walter Thigpen, Jr. and Azalee Rogers Thigpen. He was the grandson of the late James Walter and Sally Thigpen and the late Thurman and Rosa Bell Rogers.
Kennon served in the U.S. Navy and then returned home where he obtained his surveyor’s degree. He later worked for the Georgia Department of Transportation as a certified surveyor. Most recently, he was employed with Island Enterprises where he held the job of construction supervisor for 10 … Read the rest
