LMA sporting clays team shines at DNR open

The Laurence Manning Academy Sporting Clays Team was exceptional during the 1st S.C. Department of Natural Resources Youth Sporting Clays Open, competing against about 450 shooters from the state and surrounding areas.
The team competed Saturday at the Palmetto Shooting Sports Complex in Edgefield.
Middle school ladies Carrie Rickenbaker, Jamie Williamson and Isabella Harris bested all beams by winning first in the Middle School Ladies School Division. Jamie Williamson shot the highest overall score in the Intermediate Ladies Division, shooting 81 out of 100 clays.

Lady Saints defeat Andrew Jackson

The Clarendon Hall varsity Lady Saints defeated Andrew Jackson Academy 20-7 Friday in Erhardt to improve to 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the region. Gracyn Royce had four hits, with a double, and Aubrey Johnson had three hits, which included a grand slam homerun with five RBI. Holly Carlisle, Shannon Corbett and Brittany Pack each had two hits. Jordan Carter picked up the win in the circle.
The Lady Saints will host Colleton Prep Tuesday and Andrew Jackson Friday to wrap-up region play.


GOP announces results from local convention

The Clarendon County GOP elected the officers during its Convention held Saturday at Cornerstone Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church in Manning, with Chairman Moye Graham elected for another term to that position.
Cindy Risher was elected executive committeewoman for the party, while Ed Mitman was elected first district vice-chairman, Bobby Lambert was elected second district vice-chairman and Harry DeVoe was elected third district vice-chairman.
Delegates elected to the State Convention to be held later this year include Graham, Lambert, Mitman, Risher and June Brailsford, John Matthews, Tracy Mitman and Al Risher.

Lake City library honors SC’s late astronaut Ron McNair

LAKE CITY (AP) — The tiny former library that shares the larger-than-life story of astronaut Ron McNair gets more visitors during the nine days of ArtFields than any other time.
Founders of the four-year-old Ronald E. McNair Life History Center hope it becomes an inspirational site for school-aged children on day trips.
But for now, it’s ArtFields – a juried art festival that opens Friday – that has brought the center its greatest exposure, said Clyde Bess, the center’s unofficial manager.

Young Miss Striped Bass Festival Contestants

Three young ladies competed Saturday at Weldon Auditorium for the title of Young Miss Striped Bass Festival 2015. Camryn Alyssa Dunlap won the crown, while Riley Grace Ray was named 1st runner-up and Albrey Shannon Huggins was named 2nd runner-up.

Gladys J. Frierson, 74, the wife of John Henry Frierson, died Friday, April 17, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
She was born on April 30, 1940, in Clarendon County.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 626 S. Main St. in Sumter.
Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.


Wreck with no injuries at 132SB on I-95

Charles Robert Hester

Charles Robert Hester, 83, died April 18, 2015, quietly at his home.
Born Aug. 8, 1931, near Clarksville, Tennessee, he was a son of the late James Bert Hester and Tyson Lowder Hester. In 1933, Tyson moved her family back to her home in the Wilson community of Clarendon County. After graduating from Manning High School, Charles worked as a bookkeeper for the Clarendon County School Board, later going to work at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Starting as the bookkeeper, he rose to be the assistant administrator by the time he retired in 1996, after 39 years with the hospital.

Lottery tickets, cigarettes stolen from Sumter Highway store

The 44-year-old keyholder for a store in the 2200 block of Sumter Highway in Manning told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 2:03 a.m. April 10 that someone stole an unknown amount of S.C. Education Lottery tickets, four packs of Newport 100 cigarettes and an unknown quantity of quarters from the store about 1:50 a.m. that day. The man said he found a window next to the store’s ice machine broken and a large rock on the floor inside the store.

Sabrina Nicole Powers was named Teen Miss Striped Bass Festival 2015 Saturday at Weldon Auditorium in Manning. Savannah Caroline Johnson was 1st runner-up, while Kali Irene Carter was 2nd runner-up. Rounding out the Top 7 were Brianna Gabrielle Hill, Madison Ham, Hannah Griffith Graham and Tolley Adele Horton.


LIbrary to close for Bass Festival

The Harvin Clarendon County Library will close Saturday for the Striped Bass Festival events to be held in downtown Manning, and will reopen for normal hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 27. The book drop will be available for the return of unrestricted materials.

Douglas Wesley Richardson

Douglas Wesley Richardson, 58, of Salisbury, N.C., died Friday, April 17, 2015 at Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.
Born July 2, 1956, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert Wesley and Jennie Ruth Dennis Richardson. He was preceded in death by his former wife, April Richardson.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord, N.C. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Eddie Hodge. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery on Camp Julia Road in Kannapolis.
