VALDOSTA, Georgia - Robert Joseph Shaughnessy, 36, husband of Katie Shaughnessy, died Thursday, March 19, 2015, at South Georgia Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with burial following in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Monday, March 23, 2015, at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Patterson St. in Valdosta, Georgia.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of Mary Jo Ardis and the stepson of Phil Ardis, and was raised in Catholic faith. Robert was a very unique individual and affectionately known as “Captain." His favorite past times were scuba diving, teaching dive classes, motorcycle riding, golfing and fishing. Individuals who knew Robert would describe him as humble, caring, selfless, loving and smart. Through his actions, he touched many lives by acting as a father and a mentor, assisting loved ones and friends through difficult and dark times and participating in charitable events, such as Toys for Tots motorcycle runs. He will never be forgotten due to all the individual lives he touched during his life.

Survivors besides his loving wife and his mother and stepfather of Pinewood include two stepsons, Doc and Waylon Stone, both of Valdosta; his grandmother, Agnes M. Walter of Louisville, Kentucky; a brother and sister-in-law, John Patrick and Becki Shaughnessy of Manning; a sister, Mary Ellen Keller of Douglas, Georgia; a nephew, John Walker Keller of Douglas; and his parents-in-law, Tom and Nancy Rockenbach of Gray, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph M. Walter and Robert J. and Joanne Shaughnessy.
