Wreck closes Old Manning Road at Newman Branch

Clarendon County emergency responders will be closing down a portion of Old Manning Road at Newman Branch Road for cleanup due to a wreck with injuries.
The S.C. Highway Patrol reported the wreck about 1:43 p.m. Saturday. Manninglive.com will have more information should the injuries be serious or fatal.


TurboTax resumes processing state tax returns, adds security

turbotaxNEW YORK (AP) – TurboTax, the country’s most popular do-it-yourself tax preparation software, halted processing state tax returns for about 24 hours because of a spike in fraudulent filings.

Intuit, the company behind TurboTax, said it resumed filing of state returns at about 6 p.m. Eastern time Friday with increased anti-fraud measures, a day after halting the process when state agencies reported a rise in filings with stolen personal information.

Most victims found out that a fraudulent tax return was submitted in their name when they received a rejection notice after filing their returns, said Intuit spokeswoman Julie Miller.

Mt. Chapel Black History Program planned

welcome homeSUMMERTON – Keysean Prince and Jordan Prince thought they were just going to a school dance Friday.

The boys, students at St. Paul Elementary School in Summerton, were two of hundreds that attended the school’s annual Valentine’s Day Ball.

But they got special treatment when their mother, U.S. Army Specialist Gloria Lakisha Jones surprised them by coming home from Afghanistan.

Clarendon School District 1 Superintendent Rose Wilder and St. Paul Principal Rosa Dingle surprised the boys, having Jones come out before the festivities.

Allean B. Sanders, 61, wife of James Sanders, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at her home in Summerton.

Born Sept. 30, 1953, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Retus C. Benbow. She attended the public schools of Clarendon School District 1. She joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in her youth and remained faithful until her health began to decline.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jannie Ruth Black; a stepson, Matthew Dixon; four brothers; and a sister.

Levi Pearson Jr.

Levi Pearson Jr., husband of Minister Clementine “Tina” Jones Pearson, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 3, 1940, in Manning, he was a son of the late civil rights activists Levi Pearson Sr. and Viola Clark Pearson.

Survivors besides his devoted wife of 52 years include a loving daughter, a loving daughter, Lorie “Cookie” Pearson Hodge; two grandsons, Dominique Ny’Quan J’Rome Hodge and Diondre Marquis Levi Hodge; seven sisters; two brothers; and a number of other family and friends.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 121 Gregory St. in  Manning.

6 named to CCU Dean’s List

Six Clarendon County residents were part of a larger group of 2,125 students to make the Fall 2014 Dean’s List at Coastal Carolina University.
The students included, from Manning, freshman Aaron Bosier, a middle level education major; freshman Kevin Gist, an exercise and sport science major; freshman Tiana James, a biology major; and junior Abbey Bochette, an early childhood education major.
The group also included, from Turbeville, undeclared freshman of Joshua Shorter; and sophomore Brandon Shaw, an elementary education major.

Manning man fails to have 20-year sentence for shooting death overturned

A Circuit Court judge has rejected an application for post-conviction relief from a 27-year-old Manning man currently serving a 20-year sentence for the 2009 shooting death of Arvin Williams at a home on J.W. Carter Road.
Trevor L. Singleton pleaded guilty in October 2011 to voluntary manslaughter and assault and battery with intent to kill for Williams’ death and the shooting of Kashiem Laquan Lawson during the same incident. LYNCHBURG – Herbert McCoy, husband of Audrey Evans McCoy, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.
Born April 9, 19467, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Herbert Nathaniel Wise and Naomi McCoy.
Celebratory services for Herbert McCoy will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Mt. Sinai AME Church, 5985 Mt. Sinai Church Road in Lynchburg. The Rev. Marie Deas-Webb, pastor, will officiate. The Rev. Alvin E. Webb will preside.
Burial will follow in Edward Cemetery in Lynchburg.
He will lie in repose for an hour prior to services.

Thomas Sweat Sr., widower of Annie Cecil Smith Sweat, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at the VA Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.

Born April 27, 1928, in Paxville, he was a son of the late Priestly and Pauline Way Sweat. At an early age, “Bookey” joined the U.S. Army. He worked at General Motors, until his retirement. Thomas was a hardworking man who loved and took care of his family.

Survivors include five sons, Thomas Sweat Jr., James, Jreed, William and George; two daughters, Mary Alessi and Diane; six grandchildren, Norman, Natasha, Angelica, Sharon, Brain and Tiesheka; an adopted daughter, Bonnie … Read the rest

Woman arrested for allegedly stealing baby oil, skin care cream

The Manning Police Department arrested a 19-year-old woman about 2:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway in Manning after a store employee said the suspect took several beauty items without paying for them.
Myika James of 1399 Weeping Cherry Lane in Manning is accused of taking a bottle of baby lotion, a bottle of face wash, a body of baby oil gel and a bottle of skin care cream. Cpl. W.B. Secrist II made the arrest, reporting the items were valued at $16.02.
James was charged with shoplifting.
