Gamble Family Farms presents Monsanto check to Disabilities Board

Jason and Jennifer Gamble of Gamble Family Farms had little hesitation about where to donate $2,500 after asked by Monsanto, which donates to various organizations on behalf of farmers in 1,300 counties throughout the United States.
The Gambles decided to donate to the Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.

Today should be partly sunny with a high near 51 and winds out of the north at 3 to 5 mph. Tonight should be mostly cloudy with a low around 31 and northeast winds at 6 to 8 mph.
Saturday is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a high near 46 and northeast winds at 8 to 10 mph. The low is expected to be around 31.
There’s a 30 percent chance of rain Sunday morning; Sunday night


Manning High School students using text program to send ‘positive messages’

photo 2Manning High School teacher Leila McCoy’s public speaking class was just a little tired of people dogging Manning when bad things happened.
The class was also noticing a “lack in town pride and a poor outlook among many of our townspeople and many students,” she said.
McCoy asked the students what they could do to change the situation. After all, she wanted them to not be like the complainers, simply running at the mouth about how many bad things happen in Manning, while doing nothing to make things better.

Manning man facing narcotics charges after incident at drug store

A 52-year-old Manning man was charged with several narcotics offenses Feb. 11 after initially being reported to Manning police for an alleged shoplifting offense.
Carl Troy Kidwell of 219 N. Church St. in Manning was charged with two counts of possession of a Schedule I-V controlled substance and one count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, all first offenses, about 10:46 a.m. Feb. 11 at a drug store in the 100 block of West Boyce Street in Manning.

Blanche Olevia Dukes Baker

Blanche Olevia Dukes Baker, 89, widow of Donnie Paschal Baker Sr., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at her home.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Sam Curry Dukes and Susan Carolyn “Carrie” Evans Dukes. Mrs. Baker was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She retired from Campbell’s Soup Co.
Survivors include four sons, Donnie P. Baker, Jr. (Brenda), Herbert Baker, Wayne Baker, and Mark Baker all of Sumter; two daughters, Sara B. Fritsche and Shelby “Rikki” B. ALCOLU – Patty Nelson, 52, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at home.
Born March 31, 1962, in Norwalk, Connecticut, she was a daughter of Mary Ramsey Nelson and the late Henry Nelson Jr.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1060 Sammy Nelson Road in Alcolu.
Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

OLANTA – Elihu McDowell Sr., 75, husband of Lucinda Wells McDowell, died Feb. 21, 2015, at his home.
Born Sept. 28, 1939, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry McDowell and Josephine Miller McDowell.
Celebratory services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at Asbury United Methodist Church in the Shiloh community of Sumter County, with the Rev. Shirley A. McKnight officiating, Minister Ernest Frierson presiding and the Rev. Marie Webb assisting.
He will lie in repose for an hour prior to services.

SUMTER – Jobe Manning McLeod, 89, widower of Katie Lee Turner McLeod, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at his home.
Born Dec. 21, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Seymon McLeod and Bessie Bartlett McLeod. He was a retired painter for B.L. Montague and a charter member of New Start Community Church of the Nazarene.

Richard Johnson Jr., 76, widower of Dorothy Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015.
Born May 20, 1938, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard Johnson Sr. and Mary Lou Hodge DeLaine Johnson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Willard Space. He attended Clarendon County public schools.
He was a member of Greater St. Mark Church. He was employed as a truck driver.

Kosinski named new Development Board executive director

Clarendon County Council and the Clarendon County Development Board announced Thursday the selection of George Kosinski for the position of executive director of the board, a position left vacant when longtime director John Truluck left for Dorchester County in November 2014.
Kosinski will start March 16. Robert “Bobby” Boykin will continue to serve in an interim capacity until that time.

Exit 119 blocked due to wreck

A motor vehicle wreck has blocked Exit 119 coming off Interstate 95 into Manning, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. Reports do not indicate whether the wreck is blocking the southbound or northbound lanes.
