Laurence Manning Academy second-grade student Gavin Ard was one of three winners chosen for the Main Street Manning Cities Mean Business contest last week. Gavin read his selection, a poem about what goes on at City Hall, during Monday night's council meeting, and was greeted by Manning Mayor Julia Nelson. Manning Tourism Director Carrie Trebil said Gavin took a unique approach to the assignment, which asked children to write essays or poetry on several prompts, one of which included what goes on at City Hall. Gavin went around and interviewed folks working for the city. His piece is below. What goes on at City Hall? Well I’m about to tell y’all This is where decisions are made About rules and regulations for the town And its organizations Mr. Tanner is your administrator He is Manning’s Arnold Schwarzenegger Sargent Shaffer and the police enforce the town’s laws making sure things run smoothly So don’t be unruly Mr. Hardy and his crew maintain our city Which can be kind of tricky too Fire Chief Floyd and the fire fighters Put out flames caused by lighters When you have city water you to go see Mrs. Morris don’t delay pay that bill today Need a permit? Who do you see? Ms. Donna will help you for a fee. Mayor Julia Nelson and the council and the members work as a team you must remember to keep our city going and businesses steady flowing.
