Clarendon County Relay for Life Update

Clarendon County Relay for Life teams have three upcoming fundraisers planned, far in advance of the actual event itself in May. Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office and Clarendon County Team representative Dep. Annett Smith has a bake sale planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at the County Administration Building, 411 Sunset Drive in Manning. Paulette King of the King Team will be holding the team’s annual Yard Sale and Fish Fry from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at her home, 7917 Greeleyville Highway in Manning. Orders may be placed by calling King at (803) 473-6070. Smith will once again host the Gospel Extravaganza at 6 p.m. March 7 at the Taw Caw Community Outreach Center on U.S. 301 in Summerton. The concert will feature Ernest Pearson and the Singing Disciples; Heaven Sent; the Prayer House Mission Choir; the ABC Praise Team; the Heavenly Stars; Cedric Bennett and Chosen; the Gospel Jubilees of Sumter; the Heavenly Angels; the Gospel Samaritans of Florence; the Sumter Violinaires; the Howard Chapel AME Church Male Chorus; the New Singing Angels; Sons of Faith of Manning; the Gentlemen of Praise; the Voices of Harmony; and the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Male Chorus. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. They are $5 for children ages 3-12. For more information on Smith’s events, call her at (803) 435-414. Relay for Life Co-chairwoman Karen Reit reported last week on the group’s Team Captains’ Meeting, which was held recently at Manning Restaurant. Reit reiterated that teams have “dibs” on selling signs for Relay to companies that they sold last year. “All signs sold for 2013 Relay or after and, therefore, not on the (master) list are fair game for any team to sell,” Reit said. “After Feb. 28, all signs not sold are fair game for any team to sell.” Reit and Co-chairwoman Judy Gamble Hooks reported meeting with Southern Uniform and Screen Printing on Jan. 15 to decide on one T-shirt design that is in keeping with the superheroes theme for 2015 Relay for Life. Reit said Christina Darby with the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce will be posting fundraising events in the Chamber’s monthly newsletter, which is now digital and sent solely through email. “It is emailed to about 400 people,” Reit said. “They go out the first of the month.” She said any money raised by Relay teams is to be turned into Jean Witt at NBSC in Manning. She said if Jean Witt is not there, Recea Canty can take the money. For more information on Relay, or to talk about forming a team, email Hooks at jgamblehooks@sc.rr.com or Reit at reitk@yahoo.com.
