Hospital CFO offers financial snapshot

Clarendon Memorial Hospital’s Chief Financial Officer John Shaughnessy reported Tuesday evening on the hospital’s finances during the regular board meeting.

Collections for December were $2,979,000, he said.

“Which is up, considering our average is usually around $2,600,000,” he said, which reflected changes in the business office and a more comprehensive approach to collecting.

The healthcare system’s debt service coverage ratio is compliant with bond covenants set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he said. Cash on hand at the end of December was 22.86 days.

Grief Support group to meet

Bethlehem, Jordan and Union United Methodist churches will join Agape Hospice of Manning in holding a support group for those who have lost loved ones in the past two years. The first meeting will be held noon Feb. 21 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church’s fellowship hall. Lunch will be served. For more information, call Pastor Wallace Culp at (803) 435-4000.


Jessie James Welch Jr.

SUMTER – Jessie James Welch Jr., 72, died Monday, January 26, 2015, at Tuomey Hospital.
Born January 2, 1943, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Jessie James Welch, Sr. and the late Doris Aletha Watts Welch. He was raised in the John K. Croswell Home for Children, he was a U.S. Army veteran and he was a member St. James Lutheran Church.
He is survived by two sisters, Emmie Lou Singletary (Louis) of Sumter and Mary Lee Welch Morris of Wisacky; a brother, James Laurin Welch of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Forecast calls for increasing warmth as day progresses

It’s currently 29 degrees with 82 percent humidity, according to the National Weather Service. Winds are calm.

Today should be mostly sunny with a high near 57.

Tonight’s forecast calls for cloudiness with a low around 43 as south winds reach 7 to 10 mph much later.

 

 


SECC continues registration today

Summerton Early Childhood Center is urging parents of prekindergarten – 4-year-old children – and kindergarten – 5-year-old children – students to complete the early registration process for their children for the 2015-16 school year. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through Friday. Parents are asked to bring their children’s birth certificates, Social Security cards, immunization records and proofs of residency.

Tindal to hold Saturday with the Superintendent

This is a time for residents and parents to discuss any issues, ideas, concerns or good news with Tindal and the district.

Fire Ants hosting softball clinic

FireAnts_logo_head_webThe Fire Ants Softball program will host a Winter Clinic from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of South Carolina Sumter practice facility on University Drive in Sumter. The cost is $50 per player. Early registration is requested and can be completed online at www.uscsumter.edu. Lunch and water will be provided for all participants. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. Players need to bring gloves, cleats and sneakers. The clinic includes training on all aspects of the game. Police charged man with resisting arrest, DUI, outstanding warrants

Tony Maurice Fulton, 30, of 2130 Mallette Road in Manning, was charged about 9:25 p.m. Jan. 15 on Paxville Highway with resisting arrest, along with being served with bench warrants for Family Court and driving under the influence.

According to reports, Sgt. Alexander Dukes initially responded after a call from an unidentified female saying that there was a man refusing to get out of her car. The woman told Dukes she just wanted him out of her car so “(she) could go.” The woman was allegedly Fulton’s mother, according to reports.

Hospital board talks race, hiring practices

The issue of race and hiring practices at Clarendon Memorial Hospital arose during last night’s regular board meeting.

A discussion of whether the hospital has given fair shake to minority candidates for supervisory roles — and whether a board member and practicing physician has had support from the hospital — followed back and forth about whether the hospital’s insurance mandates a higher co-pay for employees who take their children to Hope-Health in Manning versus a lower co-pay for Sumter Peds.

Brown Road property scorched

Brown road fire 1Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a mobile home, damaged a shed and left a scorched landscape in the field behind 2699 Brown Road.

EMS was on scene treating one person for unknown ailments.

The Clarendon County Fire Department is dealing with a fire at an abandoned mobile home on Brown Road near Paxville. According to dispatch reports, the fire also involves a shed and is threatening about four other structures. EMS has been called to check out one resident.


Man charged with marijuana found while he was trespassing

John Louis Jr. Seigle, 43, of 12917 S.C. 260 in Manning, was charged about 10:44 p.m. Jan. 17 with simple possession of marijuana and trespass of real property, and was served with outstanding warrants, after an employee with a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway told the Manning Police Department that Seigle had been put on trespass notice for the store prior to that day.

According to reports, a warrant check revealed outstanding warrants, though reports did not indicate what the warrants were for. Police also located a small plastic bag containing suspected marijuana in Seigle’s right front … Read the rest

Shaffer: Crime down in 2014

Both violent and property crimes were down in 2014, compared to the previous year, said Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer on Monday during Manning City Council’s regular monthly meeting.
“Overall, we’ve seen an 11.5 percent decrease, and that’s great compared to other areas in South Carolina,” Shaffer said. “Particularly, South Carolina s a whole has increased historically, as it did last year. A decrease of 11.5 percent is a testament to the hard work between both our officers and the residents of Manning.”
