PINEWOOD – Charlotte Gunn Smoak, 85, widow of James Herbert Smoak Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late James F. Gunn Sr. and Sarah Cogburn Gunn Lorenson. She was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church, where she was in the Bessie Ruth Circle and was very active with the hostess committee. She retired from Sumter School District 2, where she was the secretary at Furman High School and was a lifetime member of the Educators Office Professionals.

Reporter in James Brown case called into court to stop publication of her stories

A Newberry reporter is being called into a hearing in Circuit Court Monday in an attempt to prevent publication of her stories on a diary involved in the James Brown estate case. She has also been ordered to bring notes, background information and her cellphone.
“The is a major test for the Shield Law and the prohibition of prior restraint on publication,” said Bill Rogers, S.C. Press Association executive director.

Grief Support Group to meet

Bethlehem, Jordan and Union United Methodist churches will join Agape Hospice of Manning in holding a support group for those who have lost loved ones in the past two years. Three Clarendon students make Dean’s List at Citadel

Fire Ants holding Winter Clinic

FireAnts_logo_head_webThe Fire Ants Softball program will host a Winter Clinic from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of South Carolina Sumter practice facility on University Drive in Sumter. The cost is $50 per player. Early registration is requested and can be completed online at www.uscsumter.edu. Lunch and water will be provided for all participants. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. Players need to bring gloves, cleats and sneakers. The clinic includes training on all aspects of the game. LMA girls B-team defeats TSA

The Laurence Manning Academy girls B-Team defeated Thomas Sumter Academy on Wednesday night, 20-10. Katherine Burns was the team’s high-scorer, with eight points. Trinity Harrington had seven points. The team’s record is now 7-3 on the season. LMA plays Wilson Hall on Monday.

The Laurence Manning Academy boys B-team defeated Thomas Sumter Academy on Wednesday night, 50-37. Wyatt Rowland was the high-scorer, with 16 points. J. Godwin had 15 points. The team’s record is now 8-2 on the season.

Today should be sunny with a high near 57; northwest winds will likely gain strength.

Tonight’s low is around 27.

Saturday should be sunny with a high near 51. Saturday night should be partly cloudy with a low around 34.

Sunday is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a high near 60. There’s a 70 percent chance of showers Sunday night with a low of 51.

 

 


Rec Department holding softball and baseball registration

The Clarendon County Recreation Department will hold registration for T-ball, coach pitch baseball, baseball and softball from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Feb. 20 at the Recreation Office at J.C. Britton Park on Raccoon Road in Manning.
To register, parents must present a child’s birth certificate, a $45 fee for insurance and uniform and their signatures on the registration form. There will be a $5 late fee for any registrations accepted after Feb. 20.
Age groups being offered for baseball include T-ball for 4- to 5-year-old boys and girls; coach pitch for 6- to 7-year-old boys … Read the rest


Last day to register early at SECC

Summerton Early Childhood Center is urging parents of prekindergarten – 4-year-old children – and kindergarten – 5-year-old children – students to complete the early registration process for their children for the 2015-16 school year. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Parents are asked to bring their children’s birth certificates, Social Security cards, immunization records and proofs of residency.
