It is the first poem bearing his real name. 1861 – Kansas is admitted as the 34th U.S. state. 1900 – The American League is organized in Philadelphia with eight founding teams. 1936 – The Baseball Hall of Fame presents its first inductees, which include Detroit Tigers center-fielder Ty Cobb, Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson, New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson, New York Yankees right-fielder Babe Ruth, and Pittsburgh Pirates short-stop Honus Wagner.
