COLUMBIA - Alice Bethune Shorter, the first deputy director of the S.C. State Ethics Commission, which was created in 1976, died on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015.

Mrs. Shorter, wife of Furman Levan Shorter, was born in Manning, a daughter of the late John Franklin Bethune and Ruth Gertrude Winter Mills Bethune. She received a bachelor's degree from University of South Carolina and was seeking a master's degree in international business at USC at the time of her death.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years; son and daughter-in-law, Furman Terrell and JoAnn Hawkins Shorter of Lexington; son, Mark Dwayne Shorter of Columbia; grandchildren, Mallory Grace Shorter and Charles Wesley Shorter of Lexington; sister, Viola Bethune Harley of Summerville; sister-in-law, Dorothy Smith Bethune of Orangeburg; as well as nine nieces and seven nephews.

She was a dedicated member of North Trenholm Baptist Church; a former Sunday school teacher; president of the Azalea Garden Club; was voted one of Columbia's Top 20 Best-dressed Career Women; received the National 4-H Club Congress No. 1 Dress Review Award in Chicago; a member of the S.C. Council of Garden Clubs; and the Woodlake Home and Garden Club. She was also a member of the National Council of Governmental Ethics Laws; International Personnel Association; American Management Association; S.C. Association of Finance Officials; S.C. Association of Purchasing Officials; S.C. Human Resource Management; and Summit Security Commission.

Funeral services for Alice Bethune Shorter will be held at noon on Friday at North Trenholm Baptist Church with interment in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bill Donahue Sunday School Class.
