LMA to hold Veterans Day program

LMA ShieldLaurence Manning Academy will hold a special Veterans Day program to honor our veterans at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. All veterans from the community are invited to attend this special program. Please report to the gym prior to 8:15 a.m., and you will be directed to your seat.

In addition to the program, we will be collecting money for the Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP’s purpose is to “foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.”

CMH Childbirth Classes

Hospital 2The Women’s and Infants’ Services Team of Clarendon Health System announces the following childbirth classes, which began Oct. 7 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. All classes are taught by experienced nurses of the Women’s and Infant’s team and breastfeeding classes are certified by certified lactation counselors. These classes are free and open to the public, though class size may be limited. These classes are recommended by the 28th week of pregnancy. To register, call Johanna Wilson at (803) 435-3231.

Shannon Kingery, sister of Mike and Kim Kingery of Summerton, is a senior at Clarendon Hall. According to her teachers, Shannon is “always giving it her all in class” and is “respectful and kind to teachers and students.”

St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 9 N. Dukes St. in Summerton will hold its 55th annual Christmas Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 as its main fundraiser for the Diocesan Women’s Ministries at the church to help support many local outreach and charity activities of the group. Chicken platters will be $8 each, and sides are included. Those who like to shop and do lunch can get soup and cornbread for $5. Desserts will be available.

According to the National Weather Service, it’s currently 55 degrees with 99 percent humidity and light southwest winds.

Today’s high is expected to be 76 with southwest winds at 3 to 6 mph.

Tonight should be mostly cloudy with a low around 56.

 

 


Summerton Pres Homecoming

Stukes, professor emeritus at Francis Marion University and ruling elder in the John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Florence, will share about the history of the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary.

The Rev. Dr. Charles Jarred Hammet Jr. will be the guest preacher during the 11 a.m. service. Hammet served the church as pastor from 1988 to 2001. Currently, he is the pastor of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Macon, Ga.

Tickets are $75 each, or $125 per couple. A $500 sponsorship includes two free tickets. There will be entertainment and a silent auction as well. Clyburn easily wins 12th term

CLYBURNCOLUMBIA (AP) — Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, South Carolina’s first black congressman since Reconstruction, has easily won a 12th term.

In early returns Clyburn ran up 74 percent of the vote to about 25 percent for Republican Anthony Culler, a Kingstree banker, in 6th District reaching along the Interstate 95 corridor and into Columbia and Charleston.

Sumter military analyst Kevin Umbaugh also ran for the Libertarians.

The 72-year-old Clyburn said before the campaign that he’s in good shape, feels fine and can still play 36 holes of golf a day.

House 101 Unofficial Results

votedIn the House District 101 race between Cesar McKnight and Al Smith, McKnight won easily with 6,894 votes to Al Smith’s 3,401, according to The Kingstree News.

In Clarendon County, McKnight took about 70 votes to Smith’s 20.


Ridgeway handily wins re-election

robert-ridgewayWith 23 precincts of 26 counted, Rep. Robert Ridgeway has easily won his second term in the state House of Representatives. He had garnered roughly 75 percent of the vote as of 11 p.m. Tuesday night to Republican challenger Robert McFadden’s 25 percent. Three precincts had trouble with machines closing at the precinct location and were still being counted at 11 p.m., but their totals wouldn’t affect the outcome of the House race.

All precincts counted, unofficial results have Keith Bowman and Cindy Risher joining Tony Junious on the school board.

Bowman – 1,422

Junious – 1,408

Risher – 1,095

James Parson – 992

John Bonaparte – 223

These totals will be certified 10 a.m. Friday by the Clarendon County Voter Registration Office and Election Commission.

With six precincts and most absentee counted, unofficial results are as follows:

Keith Bowman – 1,393

Tony Junious – 1,379

Cindy Risher – 1,076

James Parson – 965

John Bonaparte – 220+

Bonaparte’s final total is up in the air due to the delineation of write-ins and how they are calculated for that total. However, only 101 write-ins were made, so he cannot exceed 331.
