CBHS encourages smokers to quit

Thursday was the Great American Smokeout, and Clarendon Behavioral Health Services joined agencies throughout the nation in encouraging smokers to plan to quit or to make plans to quit smoking.

smokeoutAccording to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States, yet about 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, about one in every five adults. As of 2012, there were also 13.4 million cigar smokers and 2.3 million who smoke tobacco in pipes and other dangerous and addictive forms of tobacco.

Gallery: Local AKA chapter holds Alzheimer’s walk

With November being recognized nationwide as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Clarendon County chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. held a walk Nov. 15 in downtown Manning.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia among people age 65 or older. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and 50- 80 percent of dementia cases are diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease.


LMA cheerleaders make signs for State Champs

lma cheerleaders 2The Laurence Manning Academy cheerleaders worked on signs last week for the South Carolina Independent School Association AAA State Championships, which LMA played against the Hammond Skyhawks on Saturday night. LMA fell to Hammond 17-0, but it was the team’s first time at state since 1997. Head Coach Robbie Briggs said it is the beginning, not the end for the team.

Evening with the Superintendent on Dec. 8

rose-wilderClarendon School District 1 will host an Evening with Superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Clarendon 1 Community Resource Center, 1154 Fourth St. in Summerton. Vandalism at local office

Crime-ReportsAn employee at Vanguard Residential Services, 200 E. Hospital St. in Manning, told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 that someone shoved a stick through a front window, causing about $300 in damages when it shattered. The woman said she was inside the building and heard glass breaking. No suspect information was given.

 


Walters: Great improvement on report cards

monarchsManning High School Principal Neshunda Walters said Friday she is pleased with the high school’s advancement in its report card score under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

Report cards were released Oct. 22, with Clarendon School District 2 receiving an overall 73.6 (C). A C, under the state’s guidelines, means the district’s “performance met the state’s expectations.”

Overall, the high school received a B.

“This is a great improvement from an F the past few years,” Walters said. “I’m really proud of the progress we’ve made, and I think the community could use some good news.”… Read the rest

Ruthie McCray Timmons

FLORENCE – Ruthie McCray Timmons, widow of Staff Sgt. Westley Timmons, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at the Pee Dee Assistant Living Center in Florence.

Born May 5, 1943, in Olanta, “Nee,” as she was affectionately known, was a daughter of the late Westley Abson and Idus McCray. She attended Florence County public scho9ols. She was a domestic worker and caregiver until she retired.

In her youth, she joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church. She later joined Greater St. Stephen Baptist Church, where she was president of the Gospel Choir and Kitchen Committee and served on the Usher

Hammond wins SCISA AAA State Championship title

lma varsityThe Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats fought hard but couldn’t overcome Hammond Prep in the teams’ second meet-up of the 2014 football season. Ultimately, the Skyhawks won 17-0, never allowing the Swampcats on the board, winning the South Carolina Independent School Association AAA Championship title. Coach Robbie Briggs said that he hopes the Swampcats will make state appearances a regular thing. It was the team’s first time at state since 1997.

Congratulations to our Swampcats for making the state finals. Like Briggs, we know this is the beginning of bigger and better seasons for our hometown team.
