CMH Board gets financial report

Clarendon Memorial Hospital's CFO John Shaughnessy gave board members a financial snapshot Tuesday evening during their regular monthly meeting. As CMH transitions to outsourcing the business office, the number of days in accounts receivable continues to trend down, he said, noting that cash collections for November are at a "record high." The hospital is in compliance with the USDA's debt service coverage ratio, he said. "So no issues there," he said. Year-to-date, the hospital finished October with a $149,580 system-wide loss, which was about $58,602 worse than October 2013, but still "pretty consistent," as the net operating revenue remains steady. As for the monthly performance budget, CMH is $178,527 is in the black, or over budget. "So we're off to a good start," he said, which can be attributed to being under operating expenses for employee benefits, as last year saw a high number of health claims vs. this year for the same time period. Although no one wants people to fall ill, the hospital has had "a pretty full house" since the beginning of September; the Emergency Department has seen about 1,750 to 1,800 visits each month which have resulted in more in-patient admissions, he said. The ED has also improved on its turnaround time, he added. Data also shows more visits to the ED from people living in Sumter. "They have a better experience here ... so that doesn't hurt either," he said.
