FLORENCE - Ruthie McCray Timmons, widow of Staff Sgt. Westley Timmons, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at the Pee Dee Assistant Living Center in Florence. Born May 5, 1943, in Olanta, "Nee," as she was affectionately known, was a daughter of the late Westley Abson and Idus McCray. She attended Florence County public scho9ols. She was a domestic worker and caregiver until she retired.
In her youth, she joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church. She later joined Greater St. Stephen Baptist Church, where she was president of the Gospel Choir and Kitchen Committee and served on the Usher Board. She was a member of Jordan Chapel Order of the Eastern Star No. 237.
Survivors include a son, Nathaniel (Renee) McCray of Olanta; a daughter, Idus (Bernard) McFadden of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Linda (Levern) Gamble of Lynchburg and Pearl Epps of Olanta; four brothers, Willie McCray of Turbeville, Luke (Linda) McCray and Benjamin (Elizabeth) McCray, both of Olanta, and Monroe (Mary Ann) McCray; additional siblings, James (Sandra) Singletary and June Queen Singletary, both of Olanta, Carol Fitts of Lake City, Levester Brewer of Hartsville and J.A. (Mary) Walker of New Zion; four sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; three aunts; an uncle; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Eastern Star Rites will be held 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning.
Celebratory services for Ruthie McCray Timmons will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at Greater St. Stephen Baptist Church, 605 St. Stephen Lane in Lake City, with the Rev. Samuel Burgess officiating; the Rev. Bryan Fulmore presiding; and the Revs. Marie D. Webb and Troy Graham assisting.
Burial will follow in the Rest Lawn Cemetery in Lake City.
Mrs. Timmons will lie in repose for an hour prior to funeral time.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel and Renee McCray, 4816 Woodbay Road in Olanta.
