Clarendon County Coroner Hayes F. Samuels said Holmes Smith was killed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Sumter Highway near the I-95 overpass in Alcolu after a one-vehicle wreck. Samuels said Smith suffered multiple trauma in the wreck. There will be no autopsy. Smith was an investigator with the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office, Samuels said. "They are doing blood work," Samuels said. "But there will be no autopsy. The exact cause of death is still pending." Smith had been with the Sheriff's Office for 19 years. He is survived by a wife and five children. Cpl. David Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck is still under investigation.
